Arrow Co-Creator Reacts to Green Arrow and the Canaries Announcement

Marc Guggenheim, co-creator of Arrow and former showrunner of Legends of Tomorrow, went on Twitter today to clarify some details regarding the cancellation of the planned Green Arrow and Canary Islands series, and to thank the actresses who would play in the series. After today’s official announcement that the series – which had an underground driver in the previous season of Arrow – would not continue, some fans were sad to hear that this was not the case, but happy that the CW finally made the announcement. Guggenheim testified that the decision was made some time ago.

He has also retweeted a message from Arrow’s television news, Green Arrow, in which he says that the characters who played Katherine McNamara, Katie Cassidy and Julianne Harkavy will return to the Arrowverse, and thank them for the work they have done in their role in Arrow. Guggenheim added on Seconded’s tweet that the cliffhanger the stowaway pilot left behind has not yet been resolved.

The decision was taken early (which I think was the deciding factor), Guggenheim said about CW’s decision not to continue the series. This announcement was made today.

Guggenheim himself recently retired from the Arrowverse, but he is still receiving producer credits for the series he helped develop, so he was in a position to know what was going on.

Green Arrow and Canary was planned as a spin-off of Arrow with Shadowhunters veteran Katherine McNamara as Queen Mia/Green Arrow, as was Katie Cassidy as Laurel Lance/Black Siren and Juliana Harkavy as Dinah Drake/Black Canary. The characters meet in 2040 in the penultimate episode but one of Arrow, entitled Green Arrow and the Canary Islands, a clandestine pilot for a series planned with the trio. With Ben Lewis as William Clayton, Joseph David-Jones as Connor Hawke, Charlie Barnett as John Diggle Jr. and Reagan Harris as Bianca Bertinelli.

Bertinelli, an undercover pilot, was kidnapped by an anonymous masked figure in Deathstroke, breaking the peace of Star City, which had been largely untouched by crime for almost 20 years. Mia Queen is met by Laurel Lance, who has taken the memories of a young woman from the timeline before the Infinite Lands crisis, turned her into the Green Arrow and put together a team to combat the new threats of the 2040s.

It’s a responsibility – and I don’t take it lightly, but it’s a responsibility that I’m very excited to carry a little, McNamara said. Working with Stephen this season has been great, because I’ve seen him manage this responsibility and legacy. And in a way, it was great to follow in his footsteps.

Fans will probably want to see the series the other way around, with the obvious possible directions from the DC universe and HBO Max. Although it seems unlikely at this stage, we will continue to monitor any measures taken by the manufacturers.
