Another Voyager Star Joins Prodigy

The Prodigy space probe, launched in the 1990s, has been chasing a comet around the outer solar system for nearly two years, but it’s finally reached its quarry. The spacecraft is now on a collision course with the comet, which is known as Siding Spring.

In our own solar system, we have the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Venus, and probably Europa, an ocean world located in the Jovian system. In the distant reaches of the Milky Way, we have many stars. There are our suns, red giants, white dwarfs, and of course, the black hole, which is the only known star to have become a black hole. But there is one star that is even farther than the black hole, and this star is the Proxima Centauri.

Prodigy is the first exoplanet ever discovered around a Sun-like star; it was found by a team of astronomers led by Caltech’s David034 in 2003. Prodigy is an M dwarf, a type of star that is comparable to the Sun in size and brightness. Prodigy, however, is only 1/5th as massive as the Sun, which means it has a lower gravitational pull on its orbiting planets. Prodigy has three known planets, and its latest find, currently known as Proxima b, is the closest exoplanet to the Solar System, although it’s only about 4.2 light years away.

Kate Mulgrew isn’t the only veteran of Star Trek: Voyager returning to the franchise in Star Trek: Prodigy. Mulgrew’s comeback as Captain Kathryn Janeway in Prodigy was already confirmed by the show’s creators. One of her co-stars revealed they’d be joining her on the journey at the Star Trek: Voyager discussion at The 55-Year Mission event on Sunday. Robert Beltran, who portrayed Maquis infiltrator turned Janeway’s first officer Chakotay on Voyager, will return in Prodigy, according to TrekCore and TrekMovie. “I’m working on this voiceover/animation thing that Kate [Mulgrew] is doing, Star Trek: Prodigy,” Beltran remarked, “and I’m not sure whether I’m meant to say this or not yet.”

Beltran’s comeback is yet unknown. Janeway is a hologram installed into the USS Protostar, the show’s ship, somewhere in the Delta Quadrant, and Mulgrew’s Janeway is a hologram programmed into the show’s ship, the USS Protostar. Chakotay is very likely lightyears away. It’s possible that Beltran is portraying a different role. Is it conceivable, therefore, that the Janeway hologram isn’t the only one encoded into the Protostar? Or that it can create holograms of other members of the Voyager crew using Mulgrew’s memories?

“Five youngsters are imprisoned on an isolated planet in an unknown region of the galaxy,” Mulgrew explains in a podcast interview with Dennis Miller about Star Trek: Prodigy. “They break out from their captors and speed across the globe in search of a long-lost spaceship hidden in the sand.” They walk in, and the jail officers are after them, and they can’t get it up, and the shields won’t run — and then, out of nowhere, someone presses a button, and [hologram turns on noises]: ‘Hello kids, I realize you’re a little trapped in this place. Is it possible for me to assist you?’ Captain Janeway appears in holographic form.

“It will, I believe, captivate the imagination of little children. And if they can sit with their moms, who saw me in live action, and their dads, who adored the other men, we’ll have a family event, which will complete the cycle.”

Dan and Kevin Hageman (Trollhunters and Ninjago) created Star Trek: Prodigy, the first Star Trek series for young viewers. The show follows “a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search for a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered — a first in the history of the Star Trek franchise — but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents.”

CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, Nickelodeon Animation Studio, headed by President of Animation Ramsey Naito, Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment are behind Star Trek: Prodigy. Executive producers include Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Katie Krentz, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth, as well as co-showrunners Kevin and Dan Hageman. Ben Hibon is the series’ director, co-executive producer, and creative lead. Aaron Baiers is also a co-executive producer on the film.

The latest star to join Prodigy is the tenth planet in the Gliese 581 planetary system. It was discovered by a team of European astronomers using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile. The planet completes an orbit around its parent star in just 5.4 days. Gliese 581 is a relatively nearby star, at just 20 light years away. Prodigy is a space-based observatory which aims to study planets in other solar systems. It is currently in an Earth capture orbit about 1000 km away from the Earth..
