The San Francisco 49ers have put a lot of stock into building the foundation of the team for the near future, and the man they’ve entrusted to do it is defensive end Fred Warner. A former undrafted free agent, the 49ers saw something in Warner in the latter part of his rookie season and then called him up to the 53-man roster, where he played in all 16 games while starting in 13 of them.
49ers general manager John Lynch has said the contract for veteran nose tackle Fred Warner is going to be a big one. During a conference call with Bay Area media on Monday, Lynch said Warner’s deal will be “at the very high end of the market,” but that he was “confident” it would get done. Lynch wouldn’t comment on the amount of Warner’s deal, but said he thinks Warner is a “really good player” who is “going to be here for a long time.”
Every team in the National Football League has a salary cap. It’s an essential part of being successful in the NFL, as it allows teams to fill out their roster with players who fit a reasonable budget. What exactly is a realistic salary to expect from Warner when he hits free agency in 2020?. After his best professional season, Warner retired on the 15th. May got engaged to his girlfriend Sydney Hightower. But if all goes according to plan, this won’t be Warner’s only long-term commitment this season.
Warner is expected to get a lucrative multi-year contract after three years in the game, which would make him one of the highest paid midfielders in the league. This is the final transaction in an offseason for the Niners, who have made no shortage of big moves.
Obviously, I want to be a Niners forever, Warner said. I know it will get better with time. I’m just focused on being the best player on this team. That’s why I’m here, working with my boys, and we have big ambitions and big goals for this season.
No deal has been done yet, but by the time the Niners training camp starts on the 31st. There’s still plenty of time in July to make an impact. In many ways, Warner’s situation is reminiscent of George Kittle, the tight end of last year’s 49ers, who agreed to a five-year, $75 million contract before he even put on his workout gear in training camp.
Warner and Kittle were both selected in the third round or later, but quickly grabbed the contracts awarded to those candidates. Both are considered versatile weapons and important leaders for San Francisco to lean on.
The Niners made Kittle the highest paid tight end in history. Warner can achieve the same status with linebackers off the ball.
He’s a great player, NFL insider Mike Tannenbaum said on ESPN. He’ll be there. In my opinion, he should be at the top of this market. It should be at the very end of the market.
How is this possible? According to Tannenbaum, the minimum amount for such a deal would be about $15 million per year, but it will certainly grow from there. Parts for Warner are not hard to find.
Seattle Seahawks midfielder Bobby Wagner, himself a big fan of Warner’s work, holds the title of highest-paid player in the history of the position in annual value. Wagner signed with the Seahawks for three years and $54 million in 2019.
The closest thing Wagner has to a stratospheric center is C.J. Mosley of the New York Jets, who signed a five-year, $85 million contract, with $43 million guaranteed in 2019. Mosley’s contract sets records for total value and guarantees. Coincidentally, Mosley is handing over Warner’s role to new Jets coach Robert Saleh, who was Warner’s defensive coordinator in San Francisco the past three seasons.
After Wagner and Mosley, no other attacking midfielder has exceeded the $14.5 million per year mark. The argument for Warner to do this is very strong.

In 2020, Warner threw 125 interceptions, one sack, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and two interceptions. Pro Football Focus named him the best player at his position with an 88.6 rating, and he was selected to the Pro Bowl and first team All-Pro, while also earning two of the 49ers’ most prestigious team awards.
Warner is only 24 years old and is known for his manic study habits and athletic ability. The Niners believe his best football is yet to come.
He has exceeded every expectation we had when he came here, and we had high expectations, said general manager John Lynch. Fred is a special leader, a special player, and a big part of the structure of this team.
Warner’s leadership role has not escaped him. Given his situation and what he could lose if he were to be prematurely injured, it would be understandable if he decided not to participate in on-field activities until a new contract is signed.
It’s a similar dilemma to what Kittle faced last year, which is why there was some sort of unofficial deadline to contract Kittle before the Niners put on their workout gear to begin training camp. Warner, however, does not believe in that theory and prefers to be there with his teammates at team events to reclaim his Super Bowl status.
I could get hurt crossing the street, Warner said. You can get hurt in many ways. But it never occurred to me to skip this OTA. I know that’s a big part of my growth, but also the growth of the whole team when we’re here together, seeing things, playing, it lays the foundation that you want to work on all season and shoot like you want to. So I never hesitated.
Asked if he had discussed with Warner how he planned to negotiate his next contract, Kittle said he had simply made it clear to his teammate that he was available to him as an advisor whenever Warner needed him.
Kittle admitted that his contract situation was a bit of a distraction, although he tried not to let it become a distraction, but he saw nothing else from Warner as he waited for his sign.
He’s the same Fred he was every day when I knew him, Kittle said. Fred is fine and he’s only coming to play football. So I’m glad.
As with Kittle, no deadline has been set for the deal to be completed, but it is reasonable to say that all parties would like to see this happen in the near future. Not just to test another big play, but because the price could go up if the Indianapolis Colts settle for their young star midfielder Darius Leonard.
I see it as a matter of time, Shanahan said. Fred is a man I want to keep forever and he deserves it. I’ll be surprised if it doesn’t start sooner than expected.
