2021 NFL Mock Draft after big trades involving 49ers, Dolphins, Eagles

With the 2021 draft less than a month away, there have already been upheavals in the draft. The Miami Dolphins traded the No. 3 pick to the San Francisco 49ers for the No. 12 pick, two future first-round picks and a third-round pick.

Soon after, the Dolphins moved up to #6, which would put them at #12, #123 and their first-ever 2022 draft pick. If you look at the moves, the 49ers have their eyes on a quarterback, and the Dolphins still want a chance at a qualified position early in the NFL Draft. With the new moves, the plans for the shooting range will be a little different.

Denial: The choices I made in the spot draft are based on what I think teams would do, not what I would do myself.

#1 – Jacksonville Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence (QB, Clemson)

The assumption that the Jacksonville Jaguars won’t take Trevor Lawrence early in the draft hasn’t changed. The Jaguars have found their long-term solution at quarterback as they begin a new regime under Urban Meyer.

#2 – New York Jets : Zach Wilson (QB, BYU)

For a while, it seemed like a given that the New York Jets would pick Zach Wilson with the second pick. After a solid performance at Pro Day, Joe Douglas and new head coach Robert Saleh could easily make him the team’s next reliable quarterback.

No 3 – San Francisco 49ers (via MIA):  Trey Lance (BC, North Dakota State)

Once again, the 49ers appear to be on the verge of signing a new quarterback, after selling a great quarterback to the Dolphins before the NFL Draft. Kyle Shanahan will likely want to contract a more mobile quarterback to replace Jimmy Garoppolo, and Trey Lance seems to be a popular choice for San Francisco.

#4 – Atlanta Falcons : Kyle Pitts (TE, Florida)

The first surprise of the 2021 NFL Draft is the No. 4 pick, when the Atlanta Falcons are up for grabs. While most people in Atlanta are picking a quarterback to replace Matt Ryan in the future, Ryan’s recent contract shakeup shows that the Falcons can move forward with him under center. In this case, the Falcons pick Kyle Pitts, giving Ryan the best arsenal of weapons of his career.

#5 – Carolina Panthers (By CIN): Justin Fields (QB, Ohio)

Scheduled trade – The Panthers get the fifth pick, while the Bengals get the eighth pick, 73rd pick. Global Choice, the 152nd. Global and first choice of 2022 received.

After seeing NFC South rival Justin Fields pass, the Carolina Panthers, who are in the market for quarterbacks, wasted no time in approaching Ohio State’s quarterback. Fields makes Matt Rhule a dual-threat quarterback who has one of the best chances to win out of all the quarterbacks in the NFL draft in April.

#6 – Miami Dolphins (via PHI) : Devonta Smith (WR, Alabama)

As mentioned earlier, the Dolphins are again in the top 10 to watch for a particular player. Miami wants to give Tua Tagovailoa the best chance to succeed, so they opt for a vertical threat in Devonta Smith, a reunion with their former Alabama quarterback.

#7 – Detroit Lions : Ja’Marr Chase (WR, LSU)

During the offseason, the Detroit Lions lost Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones Jr. in free agency, leaving them short on receivers. Fortunately for the Lions, they were able to contract Ja’Marr Chase with the 7th pick. He finished first, giving Jared Goff a chance to move on.

No 8 – Cincinnati Bengals (via CAR): Pena Sewell (OT, Oregon)

It seemed inevitable – as nice as seeing Chase reunited with Joe Burrow – that the Cincinnati Bengals would take Penaeus Sewell. Even after dropping three picks, the Bengals still have their man to defend Burrow, and they were able to build even more equity for the future draft.

#9 – Minnesota Vikings (via DEN): Rushon Slater (OT, Northwest)

Predictive trading: The Vikings get the ninth pick, while the Broncos get the 14th. Total pick, 91st. Total pick, 169th. and second pick 2022 received.

After the Bengals acquired Sewell, the Minnesota Vikings won’t hesitate to go after their No. 2 running back in the NFL Draft after a trade with the Denver Broncos. Minnesota has a lot of talent on offense, and they need to address the critical need on offense. Rashawn Slater is a perfect fit for the Vikings and is a good option for Mike Zimmer’s team.

#10 – Dallas Cowboys : Jaycee Horn (QB, South Carolina)

Jaycee Horn was one of the most improved players in his draft after South Carolina’s Pro Day. Some people – including me – think Horn is the best cornerstone in the draft, and he fills an obvious need for the Dallas Cowboys, who are still at that position after losing Byron Jones for the 2020 season.

#11 – New York Giants : Micah Parsons (LB, PA)

Speaking of players who improved their NFL draft stock on Pro Day: Micah Parsons impressed scouts at Penn State’s Pro Day. Parsons has off-field issues, character issues and coverage issues at the linebacker position. Joe Judge attended Penn State’s Pro Day, and it looks like Judge is getting a defender who is just as athletic as Parsons.

#12 – Philadelphia Eagles (via SF): Jaylen Waddle (WR, Alabama)

The perfect scenario for the Philadelphia Eagles occurs in this spot draft, even if they return the sixth pick. With Jaylen Hurts ready to play quarterback, the Eagles are taking Jaylen Waddle, giving him a familiar face that could quickly become the team’s No. 1 receiver.

#13 – Los Angeles Chargers : Christian Darrison (OT, Virginia Tech)

Like the Bengals, after finding their franchise quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Chargers must do everything they can to keep Justin Herbert afloat. The selection of Christian Darrison at No. 13 was a no-brainer for the Chargers as they continue to improve their offensive line.

No 14 – Denver Broncos (via MIN): Queenie Pay (Edge, Michigan)

The Denver Broncos selected Von Miller for the 2021 season, but that doesn’t mean the Broncos won’t add another wideout in the 2021 NFL Draft. It makes sense for Denver to use Kwity Paye, who may need some time to develop better pass-rushing skills. Learning from Miller and Bradley Chubb could do wonders for Paye.

#15 – New England Patriots : Mack Jones (CB, Alabama)

Throughout the season, the New England Patriots have been the most aggressive team in terms of free agents, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Despite the return of Cam Newton, the Patriots will take their next potential franchise quarterback in McJones, as Bill Belichick has ties to Nick Saban. If Jones drops to 15th, New England certainly won’t trade him.

#16 – Arizona Cardinals : Patrick Stein II (CB, Alabama)

The Arizona Cardinals are another team that gets the perfect scenario in this NFL draft simulation. After losing Patrick Peterson in free agency, the Cardinals found his replacement in Patrick Surtain II, giving them a physical corner opposite Byron Murphy.

#17 – Las Vegas Raiders : Bitches Jenkins (OT, Oklahoma)

Since Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock took over the reins of the Las Vegas Raiders, they have made some great picks in the draft. If the Raiders close their offensive line in the offseason, they will fill the void at offensive tackle with Teven Jenkins.

#18 – Miami Dolphins : Najee Harris (RB, Alabama)

Instead of looking for a standout free agent, the Dolphins will either stick with their current backfield or target someone in the draft. While Miles Gaskins and Salvon Ahmed proved they can take over Miami’s backfield in 2020, the Dolphins added Najee Harris with their second-round pick.

#19 – The Washington Football Team: Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoa (LB/S, Notre Dame)

The Washington football team has contracted Ryan Fitzpatrick, bolstering the quarterback team. With no quarterbacks of value in the first round, Washington would rather continue to improve their terrible defense by taking a versatile quarterback like Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoa.

#20 – Chicago Bears : Caleb Farley (CB, Virginia Tech)

In one of the most shocking moves of the season, the Chicago Bears have fired Kyle Fuller, leaving a big hole at cornerback. After saying goodbye to one of Virginia Tech’s cornerbacks, the Bears replaced Fuller with Virginia Tech’s Caleb Farley.

#21 – Indianapolis Stallions : Samuel Cosmey (OT, Texas)

After the retirement of Anthony Castonzo, the Indianapolis Colts needed to replace their unstoppable left tackle. Assuming the Colts don’t mind taking Samuel Cosmey to give Carson Wentz a competent linebacker for his first year with the organization.

#22 – Tennessee Titans : Aziz Ojulari (Rand, Georgia)

In recent seasons, the Tennessee Titans have struggled to find a consistent source coming from under the rim. To have a much-needed backup on the sidelines, the Titans are making Azez Ojulari their first pick in the NFL Draft.

#23 – New York Jets (via SEA) : Gregory Russo (Rand, Miami)

Gregory Russo is one of the hardest prospects to identify in the pre-draft process. Russo has the potential to become a productive pass rusher at the next level, and Robert Saleh continues to adapt to the New York Jets defense.

#24 – Pittsburgh Steel Plant : Travis Etienne (RB, Clemson)

The Pittsburgh Steelers could go several ways with the #24 pick. While offensive lineman could be the ultimate solution, the Steelers seem to have a lot of interest in standout running backs, making Travis Etienne the pick.

#25 – Jacksonville Jaguars (via LAR): Trevon Moehrig (S, TCU)

It seems like a century ago that the Jacksonville Jaguars had one of the best defensive units in the NFL. Hoping to make their secondary an outstanding group, the Jaguars take Trevon Moehrig to partner with C.J. Henderson on defense.

#26 – Cleveland Browns : Joseph Ossai (Edge, Texas)

Miles Garrett is a superman with the Cleveland Browns who can single-handedly ruin games, as he has proven in his career so far. But because Garrett needed a running mate on the other side of the field, Cleveland chose Joseph Assay, giving them two athletic samples on the perimeter.

#27 – Baltimore Ravens : Alijah Vera-Tucker (IOL, USC)

You’d think the Baltimore Ravens, desperate for a receiver, would take Rashod Bateman, right? The Ravens showed no confidence when it came to giving Lamar Jackson a true No. 1 wide receiver. With that in mind, Baltimore takes one of the most versatile offensive linemen in Alijah Vera-Tucker.

#28 – New Orleans Saints : Greg Newsom II (BC, Northwest)

The New Orleans Saints are undergoing a lot of changes this season, especially in the secondary. While New Orleans retained Marcus Williams, Janoris Jenkins is no longer part of the team. To replace both Jenkins and Marshawn Lattimore, the Saints select Greg Newsome II, who is moving higher and higher in the NFL Draft.

No 29 – Green Bay Packers: Bateman Rate (WR, Minnesota)

After the Ravens picked Bateman with the 24th pick. The Green Bay Packers have finally given Aaron Rodgers another offensive weapon. Bateman forms a deadly duo with Dawan Adams as the Packers realize their chances of winning with Rodgers are slowly dwindling.

#30 – Buffalo Bills : Jason Ove (Rand, Penn State)

The hunt for the quarterback has been a major problem for the Buffalo Bills in recent years. Like Parsons, Jason Oveh is a defender who impressed scouts at Penn State’s pro day, giving him a chance to get into the first round.

#31 – Kansas City Chiefs : Jaylen Mayfield (OT, Michigan)

The Kansas City Chiefs surprised by firing Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz and now must replace both of their offensive tackles. While Lucas Niang is expected to start at some point, it makes sense to take someone like Jaylen Mayfield late in the first round.

#32 – Tampa Bay Buccaneers : Christian Barmore (IDL, Alabama)

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have done everything they can to not be a Super Bowl team since 2020, and for the most part they have succeeded. Although Damukong Suh is back on a one-year contract, the Buccaneers know they need to find a replacement for him. Christian Barmore would have been the perfect pick to close out the first round and form a solid duo with Vita Vea on the inside.
