The Dallas Mavericks lost a heart-breaker at home to the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 3 of their playoff series. The Clippers won 104-103, but the game was much closer than the score indicates. The Mavs dominated the Clippers in the first half, leading 58-47 at halftime, but let their lead slip away in the second half. The Mavs had a 13 point lead with 9:25 left in the game, but collapsed down the stretch. Dallas missed its last five shots, and the Clippers outscored the Mavs in the final quarter, 21-13.
The Mavs have a lot of adjustments to make in Game 4 if they want to avoid a complete playoff collapse against the Clippers. With the series tied at 2 games apiece, many NBA fans expected the Clips to win Game 4. However, the Mavs managed to play an almost perfect game, and ended up winning by 9 points. If they want to avoid a loss in Game 5, the Mavs have several things to figure out. For one, they need to get their offense adjusted so that it isn’t solely dependent on Dirk. This is a team that has several scorers, not just Dirk. Will they be able to adapt in time?
After dropping a game to the Clippers on Sunday, the Mavs are in danger of losing a 2 to 1 lead in their first round series. They now head to Los Angeles for Game 4, knowing the Clippers are better than they looked in Game 3 at home, and they’ll be hungry for a win. The Mavs know what they need to do to win this series. They just have to make it happen. Here are 4 adjustments they must make to avoid the collapse.. The first round series between the two teams is now 2-1. The Mavs still have an edge in the series, but they’re still somewhat the underdog simply because they’re not as talented as the Clips. With the Mavs’ advantage in Game 1 and Game 2, the Clippers put the pressure on the Mavs by scoring twice in a row and making adjustments. So what are the Mavs supposed to do? Make counter corrections to the mower settings. This is playoff basketball at its best, and so far the chess match between head coach Rick Carlisle and Ty Liu has been interesting to watch, at least from a tactical standpoint. As the Mavs try to regain the upper hand in this series, here are four key things they need to do to prevent the Clippers from winning the series.
4. Finding ways to get Luka Doncic’s teammates involved in the game
The Mavs operate with a heliocentric attack centered around Doncic. The Slovenian is a forward for the Mavs and destroyed the entire Clippers team in games one and two. Luca cooked the Clippers lmao pic.twitter.com/Zz6FUhHJp – Alex. (@Dubs4O8) 26. May 2021 Now Liu has adapted and made sure the Clippers send not only their best defenders, but almost the entire kitchen sink at Doncic. This means Lucas’ teammates will be more available as all eyes will be on the 22-year-old rising superstar. The Mavs need to find ways to improve their frontcourt position and bring in players like Kristaps Porzingis and Tim Hardaway Jr. to relieve Doncic. The Clippers’ approach to Luka will only work if Doncic’s teammates don’t do the same. It also doesn’t help that Doncic may be physically limited after a neck injury. Fortunately, Carlisle is an excellent offensive coach and can certainly find ways to make the most of his team’s offense. The big question here is whether Doncic’s teammates will be in the game.
3. Adjustment to the Clippers’ core team
One of the main tactics the Clippers used to maximize their offense was a small tactic. When Los Angeles did that in Game 3, the Mavs seemed lost for a moment. Carlisle needs to find the answer to this question. Whether Dwight Powell starts in place of Maxi Kleber or Porzingis moves to the five, the Mavs will have to find a way to parry the Clippers’ offense.
2. Restrict Kawhi Leonard and Paul George as much as possible
This series has been all about superstars so far. For the Clippers, Leonard and George have played key roles in the last three games. George was fantastic, especially in the second quarter, and Leonard was great the whole game. That can’t last for the Mavs, especially when their role players are struggling. This series will depend on which superstar stands out. So Dallas has to find ways to contain Leonard and George to force the Clippers’ role players (who are on the rise) to bend the offense to their will.
1. Approach the game with the same confidence as the first and second games
One playoff game can change a lot of things for any team. Take the Milwaukee Bucks’ win over the Miami Heat in Game 1 of their first round series. After that game, the Bucks never looked back and played the entire series with confidence, leading to the win. The Clippers went into Game 3 with their backs against the wall. Now that they have beaten the Mavs at home, confidence can return. Yet Dallas (led by a young superstar who has little self-confidence) can’t succumb to the pressure. The pressure will be on the Mavs side because they are less talented. But if there’s one thing we know about this team under Luka Doncic, it’s that they lead their leader by example. They are not giving up and are confident they can send the Clippers home.As the series shifts back to Dallas for Game 4, the Mavs will be looking to avoid a 3-1 series hole. The Mavs lost the previous game in LA by letting the Clippers get too many open looks from behind the arc, and by giving up a few too many offensive boards. Dallas needs to get back to their defensive roots if they want to avoid another loss and regain control of the series.. Read more about dallas mavericks coverage and let us know what you think.
