MVP Power Rankings: Nikola Jokic Is The MVP, LeBron James Nearly Out Of The Top 10

A month ago, it was announced that James Harden would walk away with the MVP award. With Kevin Durant unable to play, the Brooklyn Nets had to rely on Harden’s play. However, an injury has hampered his play of late, while others have made strong efforts to improve their position in the MVP race.

LeBron James, once a favorite, has been on the rise since the 20th round. March, but remains in the top 10. Steph Curry’s historic April brought him into the Top 5, while two of the NBA’s best big men remain at the top. Here is your current ranking of the top 10 players of the year.

To be reported

Donovan Mitchell

26.4 PPG, 4.4 PPG, 5.2 PPG, 1.0 PPG, 0.3 BPG

(via Marka)

Mitchell is starting to run hot, which makes the Jazz’s first pick even more dangerous. The Jazz have the best record in the NBA, and while the defense makes this team stand out, Mitchell has found his offensive explosiveness.

Mitchell had three games of 42 points in a row in mid-April. He had a 41-point game just five days before his first 42-point explosion. The Jazz have a 26-4 record at home. If the Jazz manage to hold onto the top spot, we’ll likely see an even better Mitchell team in the playoffs. Being in the top 10 in MVP voting probably won’t be on Mitchell’s radar. He’s more concerned about being named MVP of the NBA Finals.

10. Luka Donsik

28.7 PPG, 8.0 PPG, 8.7 PPG, 1.0 PPG, 0.6 PPG.

Donsik improved his honorable mention to top 10. He can continue to climb the rankings as his Mavericks continue to climb the playoff rankings.

>15. April 2021

April was a good month for Doncic. He scored a three-pointer against the Grizzlies. Against the Knicks, he nearly had a 20-20 double-double with 22 points and 19 assists. He was one of the helped triple-doubles against the Pistons. Doncic reminds us of the former Russell Westbrook, which means the MVP is probably in his future.

9. LeBron James

25.4 PPG, 7.9 PPG, 1.0 PPG, 0.6 BPG.

(via The Boston Globe)

LeBron hasn’t played in a month, but you can clearly see what he means to the Lakers. At one point, the Lakers were competing for the number one spot. Now, without LeBron and Anthony Davis, the team has dropped to 5th in the West. The team is clearly without its superstar.

LeBron will be back soon and may or may not make the playoffs. The Lakers will be one of the most dangerous teams in the playoffs when LeBron and Davis return healthy. If LeBron doesn’t return soon, the Lakers are not only in danger of being overtaken by the Mavericks in the standings, but they could also fall out of the top 10 in the league.

8. Chris Paul

16.0 PPG, 4.7 PPG, 8.8 PPG, 1.4 PPG, 0.2 BPG.

(via NBA.com)

Paul won’t win the MVP award, but he deserves to be named one of the best players in the league. Last year, the Suns almost made the playoffs after their miracle bubble. With Paul’s arrival, the Suns are 42-18, the number two seed in the West and just two games behind the Jazz for the best record in the entire NBA.

>20. April 2021

Oddsmakers don’t believe the Suns are a top-five team capable of winning the NBA, despite their success in the regular season. Last week, the Suns beat the 76ers and the Bucks. Don’t count on the sun when the lights are on. Paul has a team that believes in her.

7. James Harden

25.4 PPG, 8.7 PPG, 11.0 PPG, 1.3 PPG, 0.7 PPG.

Harden has been doing it since the 4th. April didn’t play anymore. His month of March was a pure spectacle. There were triple doubles left and right. Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving came in and out of the lineup, but it didn’t matter as Harden led this team to the top spot.

Nets 41-20 this season. The big three haven’t been on the field at the same time in over a week, it seems. Harden could be back in the top five if he returns and leads the Nets to the first pick. After missing most of April, his chances of becoming MVP are all but gone.

6. Kawhi Leonard

25.7 PPG, 6.7 PPG, 5.1 PPG, 1.7 PPG, 0.4 BPG.

Leonard is the product of a difficult April. He has only played in one of the Clippers’ last eight games. It’s been since the 9th. April hasn’t played 30 minutes or more. The Clippers are approaching the game with caution, knowing that the playoffs are more important than they are at this point.

The scissors are the third. Western seed and 2 games from 1. Seedling removed. Leonard could get top-3 votes if he returns and leads the Clippers to the top spot in the overall standings. Paul George has helped the Clippers in his absence, as the team is 9-1 in its last 10 games.

5. Damian Lillard

28.5 PPG, 4.2 PPG, 7.6 PPG, 0.9 PPG, 0.3 BPG.

Lillard’s shares took a hit in April. The Trail Blazers lose a pair of tough games and drop to 7th place. In his last 10 games, Lillard has made 33 of 95 three-pointers. Overall, it had nothing to do with Lady of Time.

That doesn’t take away from what Lillard did for April. We’ve seen Lillard put on a show, especially on the bubble when it really matters. With the NBA season coming to a close, maybe Lillard can recapture some of the magic he once had.

4. Steph Curry

£31.2, £5.6, £5.8, £1.2, £0.1.

(via NBC Sports)

Steph Curry will be a top 5 MVP this season, despite the Warriors’ .508. Thanks to one of the best Aprils we’ve ever seen, Curry looked like his version of 2016, when he was unanimously voted MVP.

Curry scored 41, 53, 42, 47 and 49 points in April. His 47 and 49 points came in back-to-back games two days apart. The Warriors will have to do without key players Klay Thompson and James Wiseman. In the end, Curry ends up with the relevance of Golden State and an underdog in the playoffs if the team makes it.

3. Giannis Antetokounmpo

£28.5, £11.3, £6.0, £1.2, £1.3.

It looks like the three points are out of reach for Giannis. While his numbers are excellent, the Bucs are not productive as a team. The Bucks are seeded third, but are just 3.5 games out of first place. If the Bucks make a run, led by an excellent game from Giannis, he could catapult himself to the top. It doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. Compared to last season’s MVP, Giannis is behind in points and rebounds.

No player has won the MVP award three years in a row since Larry Bird in the mid-1980s. It looks like this record will belong to one bird for a few more years.

2. Joel Embiid

30.0 PPG, 11.1 PPG, 3.1 PPG, 1.0 PPG, 1.4 PPG.

(via Bleacher Report)

Had Joel Embiid not been out with an injury, he would have taken the lead. The problem is that Jokic has more doubles this season than Embiid. At the end of the year, Embiid will likely finish second among MVPs.

The Philadelphia 76ers are the No. 1 team in the East and Embiid has a lot to do with that. The problem is that Jokic has played 59 games and Embiid only 41.

1. Nikola Jokic

26.3 PPG, 10.9 PPG, 8.7 PPG, 1.4 PPG, 0.6 BPG.

(via USA Today)

We saw Jokic lead the Memphis Grizzlies with his masterpiece of 47 points and 15 rebound. He is by far the best passer in the league and has been playing his basketball lately. The Nuggets used to be underdogs in the playoff standings, but now they control the fourth spot.

>17. April 2021

Without Jamal Murray, the team is unlikely to make the playoffs. So Jokic has this team on his conscience. Even if he doesn’t reach a triple-double this season, his 8.7 assists per game as a center are impressive, as is his 40% three-point percentage. If the season ended today, Jokic would be the league MVP.
