Chip manufacturer Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) continues to make headlines in a battle between cryptocurrency miners and PC gamers. Now it seems the company has taken a step forward to become more welcoming to those with crypto-currency mining goals.
AMD does not want to go the way of Nvidia
According to a report from PC Gamer, quoting an AMD product manager, the chipmaker has no plans to block cryptocurrency mining on its devices. The short answer is no, says Nish Nilaloyanan, the company’s product manager.
Cryptocurrency miners are concerned that AMD will implement the same measures as its rival Nvidia, which recently imposed a cap on graphics processing units (GPUs) for Ethereum (ETH) mining.
Specifically, Nvidia has made a move with the Geforce RTX 3090 graphics cards in response to complaints from the gaming community.
Nilaloyanan said:
We won’t block any workloads, not just mining. There are a few things, though. First, RDNA was designed for gaming from the beginning, and RDNA 2 takes it a step further. And what I mean by that is: Infinity Cache and a smaller bus width were carefully chosen to achieve a very specific game success rate.
PC gaming will remain the top priority, says AMD
But an AMD product manager clarified the situation:
However, reclamation requires more bandwidth and bus width, which imposes architectural constraints on the reclamation itself.
At the same time, Nilalozhanan noted that AMD continues to focus on improving its devices, with gaming being the top priority. The AMD Navi 21 chip is capable of processing about 58-64 MH/s for ETH mining.
As Bitcoin.com News reported on the 9th. According to the March 2021 report, the Navi 12 GPU will not support VCN (Video Core Following), which is a requirement for PC gaming and makes it a suitable candidate for mining crypto-currencies.
