More Than Miyagi Trailer Celebrates the Life and Legacy of Karate Kid Star Pat Morita

The life and legacy of Karate Kid star Pat Morita will be highlighted in the upcoming documentary More Than Miyagi : Pat Morita’s story. In the film director Kevin Derek talks about Morita’s early struggle with spinal tuberculosis, his struggle with drug and alcohol abuse as an adult, and how he celebrates his work as an actor and comedian on the big and small screen. Love Project Films has posted the official trailer on YouTube.

According to the official summary: The actor nominated by Oscars, best known for his role as Mr. Miyagi, left a painfully revealing autobiographical account of his short time here on earth. He traces his journey from bed rest to light and discrimination in Hollywood. At the basis of this gentle, generous and versatile artist was an army of demons that even alcohol and drugs could not hide.

During the making of the documentary a clip of Tommy Chong was shown to talk about his memories of Morita. He became Mr. Miyagi, Chong say in video. In many ways he was. That was Pat.

Archive interviews with Pat Morita herself help tell the story of his life in the film. Besides Chong and other actors such as Larry Miller, several of Morita’s well-known colleagues are interviewed about their deceased girlfriend. Among them are Karate Kid co-stars Ralph Macchio, Martin Cove and William Zabka, as well as Happy Days co-stars Marion Ross and Henry Winkler.

Morita plays the iconic role of Mr. Miyagi in the Karate Kid franchise, a role for which he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Archival footage and references have also retained the character’s presence in the popular Cobra Kai series, a sequel to Netflix. After Karate Kid, Morita also received an Emmy nomination for her role as Tommy Tanaka in the television film Amos. He also wrote and starred in the World War II film Captivated Hearts.

While Mr. Miyagi could be the defining role in Morita’s career, fans also appreciate the actor for his acting. He is best known for his role as Arnold in Happy Days, who helped establish his credentials as an actor. Morita also played the role of the inventor of Taro Takahashi in his own comedy series Mr. T and Tina, which was the first Asian-American comedy series on network television. Morita also played comic parts in Sanford and Son, Married… with Children and Hughley, and had a recurring role in the Nickelodeon series The Mystery Files of Shelby Wu.

As you will see in the documentary, Morita fought behind the scenes against her personal demons, just like many other funny and famous people. It’s a pity that he died, but the film also proves that his legacy lives on for more than 15 years after his death. More than Miyagi: Pat Morita’s story broke on the 5th. Premiere in February on iTunes, Amazon Prime Video and other streaming services.
