What’s the latest on Deshaun Watson? Texans aren’t tipping their hand – Houston Texans Blog

The Houston Texans are taking their time with their prized draft pick, Deshaun Watson. This is a smart move. The Texans are in the midst of their first playoff push in four years, and they’d like to keep Watson from being injured. This is the second year in a row that the Texans took the #1 overall pick, and it’s worked out well both times: first pick Jadeveon Clowney has played well, and second pick Teddy Bridgewater was traded this off-season after failing to live up to expectations.

The Houston Texans appear to be slowly pivoting towards the 2017 NFL Draft, and they have drafted a few players that give them a clearer picture of what they might look like in the 2017 season. With a few days left before the NFL Draft officially begins, they have two players in particular that have stood out to them. One is quarterback Deshaun Watson, the other is cornerback Charles James.

We covered Watson’s health status on Wednesday, and while it was a slightly positive note, it didn’t provide a lot of clarity. Despite a report that he would be ready for Week 1, there is still no official word on his status.

HOUSTON – In early January, Houston Texans president Cal McNair made it clear he wanted to find a new style for the franchise.

In his opening remarks at general manager Nick Caserio’s press conference, Cal said after mentioning the New England Patriots franchise where Caserio is from: With all due respect to their organization, we do not consider ourselves Southern patriots. We’re here to lead this team the way the Texans did.

More than four months after that comment, it’s clear that a big part of the Texans’ journey is keeping things secret.

At the Rookie Mini Camp on the 15th. May, speaking to the media for the first time since early March, refused to answer head coach David Calley’s questions about quarterback Deshaun Watson, against whom 22 complaints of sexual harassment and inappropriate conduct have been filed and who asked for a trade in January.

On Thursday, Calley was asked if Watson would participate in Houston’s organized team activities.

We have nothing more to say, Cully said. We’ve already discussed the Deschamps situation….. This is not new.

He wasn’t in the facility?

I have no say in that situation, Culley said.

Later in the press conference, Calley was asked if he was satisfied with the team’s voluntary participation in spring training. He said all team members still meet in Zoom. When Culley was asked if the entire team had attended the meetings, he replied: Yes, they all participated in the Zoom meetings.

Including Watson?

Right now, I have nothing to say about Deshaun, Culley said.

Watson’s status is the most pressing issue facing the Texans right now. Between his trade request and the legal situation, the quarterback’s status for 2021 is in doubt.

Earlier today, the team opened the OTA section to the media for the first time. A list of players in alphabetical order, without numbers, was handed out to the media representatives present. Although the team’s website lists most of the old jersey numbers of players from last season’s squad, 50 players were not assigned a jersey number even though the players wear jerseys with jersey numbers at practice.

When asked why there were no numbers on the list, a team spokesman explained that due to a change in NFL rules regarding jersey numbers, the list had not yet been finalized.

The team’s website has also removed some items, such as. B. Guards, centers, and all but a guard are simply labeled OL, which stands for offensive lineman. Cornerbacks and Safeties are no longer distinguished, now it’s just DB, for Defenders.

We’ve created competition at every position, and that’s what we want to see, and that’s what we want to accomplish, Culley said when asked about the team’s lack of numbers. That’s what’s happening now. It’s not so much the numbers….. but] that there is competition at every position. When we designed this line, that was our goal, and that’s what’s happening now.

Among these competitors? If Watson fails to show up, the quarterback will be suspended or placed on the commissioner’s exemption list. Tyrod Taylor, who died on the 16th. Mars agreed to a contract with the Texans, did not speak to the media at press conferences. Quarterback Davis Mills, Houston’s first pick in the draft, has not appeared on the site since the night he was selected.

When training camp begins, there will be a lot of competition. But right now, given how little the Texans give up in terms of anything, Watson’s cloud remains the team’s main problem.
