Original Supernatural Ending Revealed, Cancelled Due to COVID-19 Protocols

When Supernatural ended earlier this year, it was a game changer. After fifteen seasons and over 300 episodes, there’s probably not a perfect ending for fans – especially when the penultimate episode comes and Castiel is killed off – but it seemed clear to everyone that the Winchester brothers’ swan song was in serious jeopardy. The COVID-19 pandemic halted production of season 15 just two weeks before the finale was filmed, and when production resumed a few months later, Supernatural had to adhere to new COVID-protected production protocols that changed everything possible.

Since the finale was already written – long considered and discussed, of course – the main plot points were undoubtedly retained, but the ending removed many of the episode’s celebratory moments. It’s a shame, like some of the things described in Supernatural Season 15: The new book by designer and producer Jerry Vanek would soften the blow of the controversial deaths in the last two episodes a bit, as a memorial to a cast member.

Supernatural Fangasm The Twitter account received a pre-copy of the book, and their tweet has been doing the rounds since yesterday. This is a screenshot of a page that breaks off the ending that didn’t happen.

You can see the tweet below, but if you have trouble reading the small text, it’s also transcribed here.

The key question is, who killed the entire Kansas contingent… ? How dare you? ! #Supernatural pic.twitter.com/qZIgO29kx5

Dean would still go to heaven and we would still see Sam’s life accelerate, but those final moments had to be somewhere else.

When Bob Singer and I got together to talk about Season 15 and our inevitable ending, something came to mind that seemed like a fitting version of Sam and Dean Heaven: All the people the boys met along the way (or at least the ones we could talk into flying to Vancouver) swarmed around an old truck stop while a Kansas band played our theme song (official and unofficial): Keep up the good work, son.

And then when we opened in August, when we crammed so many people into a small space, not to mention moving our favorites from Los Angeles and two weeks of quarantine, that would have been half a day’s work, it just wasn’t realistic. Even Kansas, who are still playing, felt like they couldn’t make the trip, which we completely understand.

And so, this supernatural ending… It’s over. I love what we have now, Dean in the car on the open road, but I have to admit that sometimes I think about our original idea of Sam and Dean’s family and friends and one of the greatest rock bands on the masterpiece, and I miss it….. even though it never really existed.

I regret what might have been.
