Florentino Perez will be the first president of the European Super League if it comes to that.

The European Super League was created to save football, says Real president Florentino Perez.

Real are one of 12 European clubs who have joined the breakaway league and plan to start a new competition midweek.

According to Perez, this decision was taken because young people have lost interest in football due to the large number of poor quality matches.

Whenever there is a change, there are always people who oppose it, he said.

Alan Shearer believes that the European Super League project is simply wrong.

England’s big six – Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham – have agreed to take part in the new competition.

The decision has been criticised by football authorities and UK government ministers and condemned by UEFA associations and leagues across Europe.

Premier Boris Johnson will hold a meeting with football’s governing body on Tuesday to discuss the plan, while 14 Premier League clubs not involved in the plan are also expected to meet.

Perez said the top teams are losing money, and that games with great players will help increase their revenue.

We are doing this to save football at this critical time, Perez told Spanish TV programme El Chiringuito de Jugones.

If we continue with the Champions League, there will be less and less interest and then it will be over.

The new format, starting in 2024, is absurd. In 2024, we’ll all be dead.

UEFA on Monday confirmed plans for a new Champions League with 36 teams from 2024.

He added: The situation was similar in the 1950s. Uefa and Fifa were against the new European Cup, but this competition has changed football.

Why training for ESL?

Perez said the decision was made because of the coronavirus pandemic, which led to the games being played behind closed doors.

He stated that 40 per cent of young people are not interested in football and that Real have lost 400 million euros (£344 million) due to the effects of the pandemic.

If you don’t have any revenue other than television, you have to find a solution to organize more attractive matches that fans around the world can see with all the big clubs, Perez said.

Young people are not interested in football anymore. They have other platforms where they can be entertained.

We can recoup some of the money we lost due to the pandemic. We need to raise more money by organizing more competitive games.

But critics say the move is motivated solely by money, will destroy national leagues and goes against the integrity of the sport.

Former England captain Alan Shearer said he hoped English clubs would heed the reaction of their fans, which has been predominantly negative.

Clubs talk about being a family and the fans being the soul of the club, Shearer said at the breakfast.

Well, let’s see what they really think of the fans, because the fans are saying now.

Apparently they don’t want to, so let’s see what their fans mean to football clubs.

How would the competition work?

No specific plans for the tournament have been announced, but Perez said the tournament could be shorter to appeal to the youth audience.

Young said the match went on too long. If young people don’t watch a match in its entirety, it’s because it’s not interesting enough, or because the matches have to be shortened.

He also said that refereeing and video surveillance system will be improved during the tournament.

There will be financial equality and stability. We will try to select the judges based on professional criteria, he added.

When would it have started?

Three additional teams are added to the league as guaranteed members, and five more teams are eligible each year.

According to Perez, the group wants the new competition to start in August if they can reach an agreement with Uefa, otherwise it could be delayed by a year.

UEFA president Alexander Ceferin called the league a shameful and selfish project and spat in the face of football fans.

Seferin also said that players involved in the ESL could be banned from all UEFA competitions, which Perez denied.

That won’t happen, the law protects us, Perez added.

We won’t go into the legal issues. That’s impossible. The players should remain calm because there will be no threats. This isn’t a league for the rich, it’s a league to save football.
