A sequel to Buffy the Vampire Slayer is in the works. Since its announcement in 2018, there has been no word about the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV remake. BOOM! Beginning in 2019, studios relaunched the series for comics. Now, in 2022, Disney Hyperion will release In Every Generation, a new YA Buffy the Vampire Slayer book set in the original Buffy chronology. The novel is the first of a trilogy by Kendare Blake, who is well known for her Three Dark Crowns series. The trilogy follows Frankie, a new slayer who is also Willow Rosenberg’s daughter and a witch.

Blake tells Polygon, “I’ve been a Buffy fan from the womb, or at least that’s how it seems.” “I had no option but to take on In Every Generation because I’m a Buffy fan. You don’t say no to Buffy.”

“Imagine the famous scene from Singin’ in the Rain, but instead of Gene Kelly, it’s me, and instead of that damp street with the lamp post, it’s Sunnydale Cemetery full with vampires,” says the author.

The official synopsis for In Every Generation was also released by Disney Hyperion. It says:

“Frankie Rosenberg is a sophomore at New Sunnydale High School and the daughter of Sunnydale’s most powerful witch, Willow, who is slowly teaching her magic on the condition that she use it to better the world. But Frankie’s happy quiet life is upended when new girl Hailey shows up with news that the annual Slayer convention has been the target of a targe.

It’s unknown if this new trilogy of books will recognize the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics released by Dark Horse Comics after the original show ended. It carried Buffy Summers’ narrative beyond the devastation of Sunnydale and into the future, with an army of freshly activated Slayers at her back. It was billed at the time as the official seasons eight through twelve of the series. Previously, Simon Pulse released a series of Slayer books based during the same events as the comics. Fans, on the other hand, have mostly regarded such books’ inclusion in the canon as questionable at best.

In order for Willow to have a teenage daughter, the new trilogy must be set far enough in the future that the events in the comics might have occurred. At the conclusion of season twelve, Buffy, Faith, and Vi were all still alive. The series’ last issue, “Finale,” also reset everything fans had previously known about the Slayer line’s future, providing a clean slate for new tales. The synopsis for In Every Generation neither recognizes nor contradicts the comics, leaving questions about continuity unanswered.

This book is also noteworthy for being the first time Disney Books has published a 20th Century Fox product. As previously stated, Boom! In 2019, the studio began releasing new Buffy comics, as well as Firefly comics. Marvel Comics currently has the rights to publish Alien and Predator comics.

Spike, the bad guy who is dead now, but will always be remembered.  He is by far one of the most iconic characters in the Buffyverse, and I think there is something to be said for a movie where we can continue to see him behind the scenes and see what happened to the other characters.  The first movie showed us what Buffy was like before she started to go good, while the second showed us the consequences of her actions.  My idea is to see how Willow’s daughter is doing and if she is doing okay, and if so, have her be the main character in the next movie.  I think it would be interesting to see how Willow’s daughter is doing with her magic since that is.
