The Cleveland Browns are still looking for free agent defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, who has been courting them since last season.

The question now is how much money the Browns should invest in the former first-rounder, as much has changed since last season, when the Browns offered Clowney a three-year, $57 million contract.

ESPN NFL pundit Jeremy Fowler shed his light on the Bull & Fox show about the price range Cleveland might consider, adding that he wouldn’t be shocked if Clowney ended up with the Browns.

They were motivated last year, but Clowney didn’t follow through, Fowler said. At that time he was with Bus Cook’s agent, who of course had Miles Garrett. There were probably complications. Now he has a new agent and his market has changed a lot. They’re probably around $7 million. Maybe you can get him for $10 million with bonuses. They sell several baseball cards, so maybe they can make that deal.

Clowns and browns have a common interest

Earlier this month, Clowney visited the Browns in what was surprisingly the first visit of his seven-year career. Given that Clowney has had a string of disappointing seasons, playing opposite an All-Pro in Miles Garrett would be very beneficial for him.

Negotiations seem to be going well and both sides are showing interest in a deal, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

The Browns wanted to sit down with him, look him in the eye, talk to him and get to know him as a person. They wanted to make sure that’s what they wanted to do, Rapoport told NFL Network. It happened yesterday, and he’s been home ever since. There is a mutual interest, but we will see if both sides do something. The fact that Clowney came to Cleveland for the first time as a free agent – I believe the first time ever – puts the Browns in a very good position to contract him in the future.

Clowney missed eight games last season with a knee injury after signing with the Titans and had to undergo surgery to repair his left meniscus. The Clowns averaged just 19 tackles – four for a loss – and not a single sack in a distant year. That was early in the season in Seattle, where he missed time with a heart injury and made just three sacks.

Fowler also gave an update on the Browns’ negotiations with quarterback Baker Mayfield and running back Nick Chubb. Both could get extensions this season, but it’s a tricky situation that will determine the future of the franchise.

Last season, Mayfield threw for 26 touchdowns and only eight penalties. The Browns could opt for a fifth year or extension this season.

It’s a fascinating situation, Fowler said of the Browns’ QB situation. Baker Mayfield has had a lot of success, but we’re still not calling him a top 5 player. But I know they were very excited about what they saw. If that is enough for them, I think they will be aggressive and do it now.

Fowler was a little more optimistic about the Browns giving Chubb a long-term contract.

To me, it’s pretty simple – you’re trying to do something, Fowler said. He’s still a year away from Free Agency. This is a man who truly carried your grudge at a time when you needed it. The only other option is to go the Derrick Henry route: you let him play the fourth year, he plays the game, you give him a franchise, and then you make the trade.
