Later deze week presenteert HBO Max Zack Snyder’s Justice League, een vier uur durende film die wordt aangekondigd als een superheldenprestigevent, met verschillende digitale premières en evenementen ten bate van de American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. We are all aware of this, but we are still trying to do something about it, However, I would like to emphasise that the work of theфильм уже сегодня уже трендируется в Твиттере, за несколько дней до его официального выхода врокат. It’s going to be a long week, and chances are that if you care at all, you’ll be flooded on social media with discussions about Zack Snyder’s Justice League movie.
But you’re wondering (since you’re just a number to the point of this article), what is the Justice League Snyder? That’s a very thoughtful question, dear reader, and we’re glad you phrased it that way.
Most people who love superhero movies probably remember Justice League 2017. The film, credited to director Zack Snyder, was a critical and commercial disappointment, to say the least. Although the film was critically acclaimed, it did slightly better than Snyder’s previous film, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (on Rotten Tomatoes, Justice League scored 40%, compared to Batman v Superman’s 28%), the commercial prospects were nowhere near what Warners had hoped and expected from a film that brought so many superheroes together and cost so much.
Justice League was the third DC Universe film to come out in Snyder’s name (after Man of Steel and Batman v Superman), but he was hired as the visionary who would move the DC Universe film franchise forward. He helped set the tone for the entire universe, advising other filmmakers on their projects and overseeing Batman v Superman, where characters like Flash, Aquaman and Wonder Woman made their debuts.
Let’s be clear: Justice League’s box office was a disaster. Batman v Superman didn’t meet the studio’s expectations, but the film did bring in nearly $900 million worldwide. With Justice League, they had a movie with six superheroes and a worldwide box office of $657 million. The film failed to crack the top 10 films of the year at the box office, and the infomercial was won by no less than five superhero films – Wonder Woman, featuring a character who was actually in Justice League; Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2; Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok; and Logan.
Aside from being a sequel to Batman v Superman, which is highly controversial on the internet, Justice League has suffered from production rumors from the start of filming. Snyder has been hired, it was announced, for parts one and two of Justice League, which fans have mistaken for a two-part epic, similar to what Warners did with Harry Potter and Lionsgate did with Twilight. When the Justice League visit began a few months later, any idea of the Justice League in Part 2 was marginalized, depending on the theatrical effectiveness of the Justice League’s work.
So that’s it, huh? Is Zack Snyder’s Justice League movie just the second part of the Justice League story?
Oh, sweet summer child. No.
While making Justice League, Warner was concerned that the film would not live up to high expectations and enlisted Joss Whedon, writer of Marvel’s The Avengers, to work on the script. In an interview with the New York Times this week, Snyder confirmed what many have long suspected, namely that WB executives wanted Whedon to add a light, humorous touch to the film, which Snyder saw as a massive, mythic epic.
Marvel, according to Snyder, had completely cornered the market with its particular brand of sleazy, flashy superhero action movies, and if Warner wanted its DC films to have a distinctive and successful brand, he suggested building on the idea that their heroes are cosmic in scope and larger than life (unlike Marvel’s, many of whom are ordinary guys who have stumbled into heroism or sought it out to make a difference in a harsh world). So the idea of bringing in Marvel’s biggest names (up to that point) and asking them to engage in dialogue was contrary to Snyder’s philosophy at Warner Bros.
During the production of Justice League, Snyder lost his daughter Amber to suicide. He left Justice League and has since said that he doesn’t want to spend his nights at home grieving and his days at work fighting the battles required at Warner Bros. to make the film look like his vision. The studio decided that Whedon would use his experience from the Avengers affair to work on Justice League, and commissioned a few reworkings to align the project with what he and a number of studio executives considered their ideal version of the film. The film retained its original release date – just over eight months after the death of Snyder’s daughter – so one of the byproducts of Whedon’s reboot was a timeline in which Henry Cavill was supposed to play Superman, but was contractually forbidden to shave off the mustache he had grown for Mission: Impossible. – Case. Not only did the film feature incredibly inadequate CGI to hide the mustache, but it also started with a mustache scene. It became an immediate reminder, but also a symbol of the film’s disastrous reception.
In der Zwischenzeit hat Snyder einige der Leute hinter den Kulissen, mit denen er zusammengearbeitet hat, gebeten, das Montageteil, das er für Warner Bros. A montage is ultimately the entire material of the film that has been created and processed in the richest possible way. There are virtually no visual effects or music, which makes it look incredibly raw, especially for a high impact film like Justice League. Snyder’s version stayed with him, complete but incomplete, while the studio swapped out a version of the film that blatantly combined the work of two very different directors to arrive at what they mistakenly thought was the most commercially profitable version of the film.
The movie came out, it did what it did, and fans who loved Snyder’s Man of Steel and Batman v Superman immediately began referring to the movie portion of Justice League, mockingly called the Josstice League. It won’t be long before the first tweets start circulating with the hashtag #ReleaseTheSnyderCut. From late 2017 to 2020, the volume and intensity of demands increased for Snyder to finish and release his version of Justice League. Eventually, it got to the point where every tweet from Warner Bros – and sometimes every tweet that fans decided Warner Bros was likely to see, like an article in Deadline announcing the new CEO of parent company WarnerMedia – was flooded with dozens or hundreds of fans demanding #ReleaseTheSnyderCut.
It was the obsessive enthusiasm of fans that caught the attention of said CEO – and HBO Max, the company’s newest streaming service, which didn’t have as many original hits built in as Disney+. At some point it was decided that an HBO Max version of Snyder’s Justice League would be what Warners was interested in. According to the director, he decided not to take a salary for the director’s cut (after all, he was technically already paid to make the film, right?) because he preferred more autonomy from the studio’s demands and more creative freedom to finish the film the way he wanted. A budget has been released for music, visual effects and a small amount of reshoots, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League has been announced.
The film runs just over four hours, which is even longer than The Avengers: Endgame, which features dozens of characters and served as the cover for more than a decade of Marvel movies – and was shot for an IMAX presentation, making it look bigger and tighter than most widescreen films… like a full-screen movie from the bygone era of VHS and picture tube TVs.
The idea of a director’s cut for a Snyder film is not new: director’s cuts for Dawn of the Dead and Sucker Punch have already appeared on DVD, and the ultimate editions of Watchmen and Batman v Superman have been greatly expanded. Still, the idea of turning a two-hour film into four hours seems pretty wild…..
As you might have guessed, click on the hashtag #RestoreTheSnyderVerse. We’ll let you find out what’s happening to him.
