Lunar Eclipse Photos: See the Super Flower Blood Moon Up Close

There’s only one month left until the big event, and as the first full moon of 2018 approaches, we’re all wondering what the sky will look like. On February 15th, a super moon will fall on the Earth, and the lunar eclipse will follow the next day. So, what will this month’s super moon look like? Well, if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, it will be the first full moon to happen this year, and if you’re in the Southern Hemisphere, it’s the second full moon of 2018.

The best time to take photos of the moon’s shadow will be on August 21st, when the Moon will be exactly full. The Moon will slowly pass through Earth’s shadow, and by the time totality begins, the shadow will have blurred into a fuzzy black disk. This is known as a penumbral shadow. But, once totality begins, the Moon will become a dark red, or deep orange, and it will appear super-sized. This is known as a super moon, or more widely known as a blood moon.

The “Super Flower” (as I’m calling it in reference to the lunar eclipse) is the first supermoon of 2018, and it’s a blood moon. This is actually the second time in the last 100 years that a supermoon, lunar eclipse, and blood moon have coincided. On September 23, 2015, a supermoon, lunar eclipse, and blood moon coincided. However, we’re only in luck if you live in the Pacific Northwest (or on a boat) because the eclipse will be visible from the rest of the world in just a few days.

Photos of the total lunar eclipse that took place last night show the moon bathed in a strange reddish glow as it passes through the Earth’s shadow.

Expert observers called this eclipse a super moon because three lunar phenomena occurred simultaneously: a super moon, a total lunar eclipse and a blood moon. During a supermoon, the moon appears 14% larger and 30% brighter in the sky because the natural satellite orbits closer to Earth than when the moon is at its greatest distance from Earth. The moon will also pass completely in Earth’s shadow – an eclipse – and take on a reddish hue due to the light filtering through Earth’s atmosphere during this event – a blood moon.

In areas where the weather was clear, the eclipse was visible in western North and South America at the beginning of the morning moon and in Oceania, Australia and East Asia at the rising of the evening moon. This was the first total lunar eclipse since 2019.

The moon was completely hidden from Earth’s view for nearly 15 minutes.

In folklore, the full moon of May is known as the flower moon because it occurs at the time when spring blooms in the northern hemisphere. The Farmer’s Almanac popularized the term by tracing it to the Algonquians of North America. The Almanac notes that other Native American cultures have traditional names for the full moon in May, including the leaf-falling moon, the egg-laying moon, and the frog moon.

Lunar eclipses occur naturally when the earth slips between the sun and the moon, blocking the sunlight that normally illuminates the moon’s grayish, crusted surface.

The next total lunar eclipse is on the 16th. May 2022, when the bright blood moon shines in the night sky again.

It was also a rare event that will not be seen again until 2034. The eclipse was the last of four consecutive total lunar eclipses, or Moonsets, which will be visible from the Americas again on September 28th. This type of eclipse is nicknamed a “Blood Moon” because it causes the Moon to appear red, and is also a total lunar eclipse, meaning the Moon will be completely immersed in Earth’s shadow..
