Howard Donald’s anxiety ‘off the scale’ during ‘lonely’ Masked Dancer

It was a difficult performance for Howard Donald, the chief dancer in the  Royal Ballet’s latest production, The Rite of Spring. The performance was one of the most difficult that Donald had ever done. The dancers were not accustomed to performing in the acrobatic manner that this production demanded. The  motion was so disorienting that it took Donald a few minutes to realize that he was in the middle of the dance.

Wired’s Howard Donald is a writer and multimedia artist based in Berlin, Germany. His work draws on his 30-year background in theater, film and music to deconstruct the relationship between anxiety and art.

A week before he was due to perform at the Royal Albert Hall, a masked dancer told the Mirror that he was suffering from anxiety and the pressure of performing in front of thousands of people. “I’ve never felt so nervous and anxious as to be on the verge of tears,” he said. “I just do not like being on my own in a crowd, it’s not natural to me.”. The Take That star revealed last week that she was Zip during the show’s finale, leaving judges Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross, Mo Gilligan and Oti Mabuse stunned. The singer revealed that she participated in the show despite a shoulder injury and her anxiety. Asked by This Morning presenters Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby if he was suffering from a sore shoulder, Howard said: Yes, you can wobble your shoulder a little, then the muscles cross over and it’s a hard hit on the shoulder. Speaking about his decision to enter the competition, the 53-year-old said: When I was first asked, I thought: I’m not comfortable with that, but in these circumstances I like to do things I’m not comfortable with. It’s a big challenge, it’s a deep dive, I did it for that reason and also out of boredom and to take my mind off the kids! He was even more worried: I always said I wanted to be ahead of the game, so I did two programs every two weeks. That’s why I was so excited, because I thought, I don’t want to fail, I don’t want to mess up the routine, I want to be ahead of the game. The singer added: You have about ten days to do a routine, then you do the show, and as the weeks went by, there was less and less time to do the routine, so it got harder and harder. Covid doesn’t have the right to rule the backstage area, but you’re not even allowed to encourage and tell other candidates to behave. word-image-3588 Judges Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross, Mo Gilligan and Oti Mabuse (Photo: ITV)
