As we approach the end of 2020, it’s time for the entertainment industry to take stock every year, and even if there wasn’t so much to consume as if the global pandemic hadn’t turned everything upside down, there was no shortage of online discussions. Is it realistic to think that people would do what they would do if they were stuck at home or if they were away from society but went on the internet? Now that the year 2020 is finally over, Reddit has shown which films were the most talkative in 2020, and it turns out that Tenet and Dune are at the top of the list.
According to the report (via Entertainment Weekly) the ten most discussed films in the m/f were Tenet, Dune, Mulan, Borat, Hedgehog, Wonder Woman 1984, Hamilton, Birds of Prey, Black Widow and Invisible Man. This is a fairly varied and interesting list, including films released before the pandemic (Birds of Prey, Sonic the Hedgehog and The Invisible Man), some of which were released during the pandemic and others not yet – not to mention the different genres.
It’s especially interesting to note that Tenet is at the top of the list of most discussed films, but this is probably no big surprise. As one of the few successful films to be released in cinemas in 2020, Tenet was at the centre of many discussions about the decision to release the film in September, as well as the revenues from the box office, even though the film had not delivered all the expected results or could have been released in a year without the pandemic.
It’s also interesting to see Dune and Wonder Woman 1984 in this list, as both films are released simultaneously in the available theatres and on HBO Max – the movement itself has received some criticism. Last week Warner Bros. announced that it will broadcast every step of its slate screen simultaneously on HBO Max in 2021 – including The Suicide Squad, The Matrix 4, Dune and many others. The strategy follows what the studio had previously announced for Wonder Woman in 1984 – which started at Christmas – and one film worked quite well, but was interpreted very differently when it was applied to the entire board in 2021.
These periods of exposure to coronavirus are unexplored by all of us, which is why AMC signed the HBO Max exemption for a single film, Wonder Woman 1984, aired at Warner Brothers over Christmas when the pandemic seemed to have reached its peak, Adam Aron, President and CEO of AMC Theaters, said in a statement accompanying the announcement. However, Warner now hopes to do the same for all his films in 2021, although there is a chance that the cinema vaccine industry will come around.
Aron continues: It is clear that WarnerMedia intends to donate a significant part of the profitability of its studio division and its production and film partners to subsidise the launch of HBO Max. As far as the CMA is concerned, we will do everything we can to prevent Warner from doing this at our expense. We will strive to create the economic conditions that will enable our companies to survive.
