England v Denmark: Euro 2020 semi-final advice from former Three Lions to current players

It is almost here. The Euro 2020 semi-finals will be decided on Wednesday, May 29th, with England taking on Denmark at the Stade de France in Paris. The first leg finished 0-0, with the second leg to be played on Tuesday, May 28th.

With England’s place in the Euro 2020 final secured, there will be a lot of work to do before their appearance in the showpiece on 13th July. The Three Lions are in action in the semi-final against Denmark tonight and will be aiming to reach their first final since Euro 2004. Here’s the advice from two players who know what it takes to score goals: on the eve of the semi-final, we spoke to Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck.

Reaching the semi-finals of a major tournament doesn’t happen often, and for many, such an opportunity only comes once in a lifetime.

For many generations of England players – since Italy-90, Euro-96, the 2015 and 2019 Women’s World Cups and the 2009 and 2017 Women’s European Championships – these are matches that define their careers. Maybe even a life.

Gareth Southgate and his team have the chance on Wednesday to do what no English team has done in the last 55 years: reach the final of a major tournament.

What have the players who have been through it before – and failed to make the final round – learned from this painful experience? And what advice would they give their Euro 2020 colleagues?

Gary Lineker – Who says you can’t win with kids?

It’s been a long time since I was in the semifinals of a major tournament. After the quarter-finals, we had little time left, and all we could think about was how to get our tired bodies on the field.

When you’re on the road with the team, you don’t realize how crazy the country is, so we were a little closed off, and of course there was no social media.

But you knew the extent of it. These players have experience and that will help them. They are good young players, many of whom won tournaments in their youth. So they are in a much better position than we were in 1990.

I wouldn’t tell myself anything else, but I would tell Peter Shilton to dive a little earlier every time he takes a penalty.

Alan Shearer – Why enjoy every minute

Alan Shearer played alongside England manager Gareth Southgate in the semi-finals of Euro 1996.

Alan Shearer was the top scorer at Euro 1996 and opened the scoring in the semi-final, which was lost to Germany on penalties. The striker played on the side of current England coach Gareth Southgate. He presented a documentary on Euro 96 recalling his memories, and this week he wrote a column to share his message with current players.

There are times in everyone’s life when you look back and say: What if I did? Memories that keep you up at night, reliving them over and over again.

That semi-final in 1996 is still the most important match of my life. The atmosphere and preparation were just indescribable. I’ll never forget it. I still get goose bumps just thinking about it.

My advice to England’s players as they prepare for the Euro 2020 semi-finals is pretty simple: all for you, so enjoy every minute of it.

I remember jumping out of the hotel in 1996 to get a haircut, and when I got out of the cab in downtown Burnham, there was some kind of street party going on. There will be more this time.

You can’t escape that atmosphere, but you don’t want to – it’s a great feeling to know that the whole country is supporting you on such a big stage.

Come on. I can’t wait.

Karen Carney – How to become the one to change the world

Karen Carney has been in four semifinals of major tournaments between 2009 and 2019.

Former attacking midfielder Karen Carney played in two European Championship semi-finals (2009 and 2017) and two World Cup semi-finals (2015 and 2019). She substituted in three of those games and scored the winning goal in extra time, helping England reach the 2009 European Women’s Championship final.

All semifinal matches were different. It felt like there were more expectations in 2019. This was our third semi-final in a row and we felt we had to go to the final. Looking back, I should have relied more on the experience of the 2009 semi-final which took us to the final.

There were expectations for 2019, but now it’s about managing them. You have to be confident but not arrogant, and I think the England team has that.

One of the hardest things off the field is leading people. There will always be players who are disappointed that they are not playing enough. I played every game until the semi-finals in 2009 and manager Hope Powell didn’t want to use me. I asked her why, and she said it was because of the big picture. I didn’t realize that as a young player.

This is where the team behind the team becomes so important. I remember a conversation with the picker, Pat. It gave you a chance to express yourself and you were able to move on. These team members are so important. They make sure everyone is going in the same direction. Each employee is part of a larger team, and it is important that they are part of that team as well.

My advice to Jack Grealish, another creative player who may not be in the starting lineup: Keep expressing yourself and don’t be afraid of anything. And if you can’t make a difference on the field, you have to make a difference off the field.

One of my favorite sayings is that what sets you apart is what sets you apart. Jack is different.

We are creative players, so we need to excel when we get the chance. Sometimes that can be risky, because being creative means doing things that don’t always work. You should try it. You can take it as a challenge and accept it, and I think Jack will.

Terry Butcher – from one captain to another

A place in the semi-finals of the World Cup is what they wanted to achieve. Our progress has stopped. We gained momentum and maybe we were a bit lucky to get through against Belgium and Cameroon.

We thought: We haven’t really played yet, we haven’t shown what we can do. But there was a lot of optimism. It was good. It was the right thing to do. The system was good. Our families came to watch. They hoped it would happen.

I’m sure this group of players feels the same way, and my point is this: seize this great opportunity. Take this chance, this chance. If I could say anything to my younger self right now, it would be: Make it a special moment in your life and in the lives of England fans.

Many of these players have played in major European competitions and won titles. They have a lot of experience winning, but they will feel that they belong here.

I love this team. I like it a lot. You can’t help but love them. They give you energy. They cause excitement. They give you victories.

My advice to Euro 2020 captain Harry Kane: Keep setting a good example. Keep believing in yourself. Give us your strength. Give us your character. Go out and be Harry Kane. Be what you are – nothing else – and that is enough. You’re going to get chances and you’re going to score goals because you’re so good.

Steve McMahon – You rarely get a second chance, so take it

Steve McMahon played 277 games for Liverpool, while current Reds captain Jordan Henderson played 290 games for the club.

Steve McMahon made four appearances at the 1990 World Cup, when England reached the semi-finals, but the midfielder was not used in the loss against West Germany.

You can’t let chance take over. You have to play for the team, not for chance. The fear of failure puts pressure on both sides. If England don’t win, it’s a failure. Football is about pressure because we have a lot to lose.

I wasn’t chosen to start the game, but I remember in the middle of the game when Gazza [Paul Gascoigne] got a yellow card and knew he would be suspended, I was his natural replacement. I thought right away: If we win this match, I’ll play in the final of the World Cup. Emotions ran high, but we were not satisfied with the result. It was a strange feeling.

My advice to Jordan Henderson, another Liverpool player who may also be waiting for his chance: Such things can elude you. This may be your only option. You rarely get a second chance. This is a great opportunity… Make the most of it!

Jordan is a real pro. On and off the field, he proved he was ready when needed. He came off the bench in the quarterfinals and scored a fantastic goal. He didn’t pout and continued his game. He was proactive and behind the scenes he was a great person. He is also part of the team because of his leadership skills.
