Mohamed Salah scored twice as Liverpool beat Norwich 3-0 in the Premier League. The Egyptian was on target in the first half before setting up Roberto Firmino for the second, before scoring his own goal in the closing stages.
The Reds were in a position to clinch a victory at Carrow Road. The rain started to come down, but things were not going to get worse during the final few minutes. Mohamed Salah was going to have his moment in the spotlight. Salah had scored three goals and assisted two in his last three Premier League matches. He is playing with confidence right now and his performance on Saturday was a big reason for the performance of the team. The Egyptian had scored two goals in the opening 30 minutes and could have scored a third if he had taken his chance. It would have been fair to write off Norwich after conceding three goals but Liverpool did not punish their opponents.
Norwich City handed Liverpool a third straight defeat in a 3-0 loss on Saturday afternoon. Mohamed Salah scored the first two goals in the game, but the Reds were unable to respond and remain third in the Premier League.
In their previous 15 Premier League meetings with Norwich, Liverpool has gone undefeated.
Liverpool’s Premier League championship quest got off to a good start with a comfortable victory against newly promoted Norwich City is a football club based in Norwich, with Mohamed Salah scoring one goal and providing two assists.
Salah scored his team’s third goal to become the first player in five Premier League seasons to score on the opening weekend, capping a superb performance that included assists for Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino.
The return of talismanic defender Virgil van Dijk after a 10-month layoff lifted the Reds’ spirits ahead of kickoff, and their day was made much better when they grabbed the lead halfway through the first half.
Salah was found inside the box by Trent Alexander-Arnold, and the Egypt forward’s touch dropped into the path of Jota, who finished decisively.
It was cruel on Norwich, who had made a strong start to the game, cheered on by a raucous home crowd celebrating their return to Carrow Road and the Premier League.
Teemu Pukki, who scored 11 goals in the Premier League last season, forced Alisson into an early stop after sneaking in behind the visitors’ defense.
Liverpool, on the other hand, seldom seemed in danger of letting their advantage slip after they took the lead, as Norwich battled to regain their early rhythm.
Six minutes after the half, Max Aarons saved a goal-bound attempt from Sadio Mane, but replacement Firmino added a second goal soon after the hour mark.
Salah chose to pass to his team-mate rather than shoot from a closer angle after the Brazilian striker had just been on the field for four minutes when he tapped in from close range following selfless work by Salah.
Salah completed the ideal start for the Reds by collecting the ball after a corner had been only half cleared and curling a beautiful shot into the back of the goal.
Liverpool’s defense has improved.
Norwich loses 3-0. Jurgen Klopp is ecstatic to have football back in his life.
Last season, Liverpool finished third in the Premier League, 17 points behind winners Manchester City, following a stunning collapse in which they failed to deal with defensive injuries.
However, all indications are that they will be well-supplied in that area this season. Van Dijk made his first league appearance since October of last year, while Joel Matip, who had been sidelined for seven months, joined him in the center of defense.
Joe Gomez, who was also out for most of the second half of last season, and new acquisition Ibrahima Konate were both on the bench against Norwich, indicating that Liverpool are suddenly well supplied in an area that seemed barren last season.
The performance of Van Dijk and Matip was a little rusty at times, especially early on when Norwich snuck in behind the visitors’ defense on a number of occasions.
However, they got into the game and by the second half were comfortably repelling the Canaries’ attempts – albeit a superb close-range save from Alisson at the end was required to preserve a clean sheet.
The Reds will have tougher challenges this season, but with greater depth in the defense and three of their four offensive players scoring against Norwich, they seem to be in excellent position to make a longer run at the championship this season.
Norwich’s Groundhog Day
0-3 Norwich City Despite the ‘tricky’ Liverpool game, Daniel Farke praised Norwich.
Norwich has returned to the Premier League following a season in the Championship, which they won easily to reclaim their place in the top division.
Their previous season at this level ended with them finishing bottom of the table and being relegated with only 21 points, with the bulk of their games featuring periods of strong performance that they failed to capitalize on.
Norwich supporters were in a high mood before kick-off, making the most of their return to Carrow Road and the Premier League, and the good feelings continued as the home side made a strong start.
For the first 25 minutes, they were the superior team, attacking with speed and directness, which worried the recovering Liverpool defense. But it quickly became an all-too-familiar tale, as they were unable to capitalize on their excellent performance before their opponents took the lead.
They were second best from then on, improving somewhat towards the finish when Alisson denied Ben Gibson a consolation goal.
An opening-day loss to Liverpool will not define their season, and they have struggled against the Reds in the past, with the Reds winning 13 of their previous 15 meetings.
But, with games against reigning champions Manchester City, Leicester City, and Arsenal on the horizon, it’s a reminder of how difficult life in the Premier League can be.
