Lakers Legend Elgin Baylor Dies At 86 –

Los Angeles Lakers (CBSLA) – Los Angeles Lakers legend Elgin Baylor has died. He was 86 years old.

His death from natural causes was announced by the team Monday morning. Baylor’s wife, Elaine, and daughter, Crystal, were by his side when he died.

Baylor was one of the few players whose career with the team stretched from Minneapolis, where the Lakers were born, to Los Angeles, where they eventually ended up. He was one of the first gifted players in the NBA and served as a role model for future legends like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Ervin Magic Johnson.

Baylor was founded on the 16th. Born in Washington, D.C., in September 1934. He spent one season at the College of Idaho before transferring to Seattle University and leading the team to its first NCAA championship game. In 1958, he was chosen first by the Minneapolis Lakers. He averaged 24.9 points, 15 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game and was named Rookie of the Year.

After 14 seasons with the Lakers, he retired from basketball in 1971 to become coach of the New Orleans Jazz and vice president of basketball operations with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Baylor was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1977. His jersey, number 22, was retired by the Lakers in 1983, and in 2018 a bronze statue was unveiled outside the Staples Center in Baylor’s honor.

The team dedicated its 2020-21 Lore City Edition jersey series to Baylor, who was hailed by the team as the first player to play above the rim, a fighter for civil rights and the first player to truly give energy.
