Jack Grealish: Man City sign England midfielder from Aston Villa for £100m

Aston Villa have confirmed the signing of Manchester City midfielder Jack Grealish for £25m.

Jack Grealish is an English footballer who plays as a midfielder for Premier League side Aston Villa. He is primarily an attacking midfielder, but is also capable of playing out wide, and is known for his pace and power, as well as being an accurate set piece and penalty taker. Grealish has scored 34 goals and provided 25 assists for Aston Villa since they signed him from Birmingham City in 2016, and was named as a PFA Young Player of the Year in 2017.

There were a number of goals to keep up with during the January transfer window, but perhaps most of those would have been directed to the Aston Villa side of things. With Grealish on his way to Manchester City for £60 million, the Midlands side have lost a player who was seen as a key piece of their promotion winning side the previous year. Given Villa’s status as a re-building side, and with Grealish having just turned 21, there should be plenty more opportunities for him to shine in the future.. Manchester City has paid £100 million to Aston Villa for England midfielder Jack Grealish.

The 25-year-old joins the Premier League winners on a six-year deal and will take over Sergio Aguero’s number 10 jersey.

Manchester United spent £89 million to re-sign midfielder Paul Pogba from Juventus in 2016.

“City is the greatest team in the nation, and their manager is regarded as the finest in the world,” Grealish added.

“Being a member of our club is a dream come true.”

Grealish becomes the seventh most expensive player in history as a result of the deal.

He may make his Pep Guardiola debut in Saturday’s Community Shield match at Wembley against Leicester City.

Grealish, a lifelong Villa supporter, joined the club at the age of six and went on to make 213 appearances in all competitions, scoring 32 goals.

“It was certainly a tough few months since I have been an Aston Villa supporter my whole life, but when I talked to the manager here and saw the kind of players they have here, it was something I couldn’t say no to in the end,” he added.

“One of my ambitions was to compete for big prizes. It was an offer I couldn’t refuse.

“Being a part of the Champions League was a huge step for me; I haven’t done it yet.” It was exactly what I wanted to do when I was sitting there on a Tuesday or Wednesday night last year. It will be a dream come true to be able to accomplish it with this club.

“I had a lengthy conversation with [Pep Guardiola] about positions and other football-related topics.” It was such a good conversation, and it demonstrates why I want to play for him.

“The way this team is set up to play is perfect for me, and the manager’s style of play is perfect for me.”

“Jack’s progress over the last several seasons, both for club and country, has been clear for everyone to witness,” said Txiki Begiristain, city director of football.

“His natural skill, along with his desire to develop as a player, has propelled him to the forefront of global football’s most exciting offensive players.”

Villa chief executive Christian Purslow disclosed a £100 million release clause in the five-year contract Grealish signed last summer in a speech to fans outlining the reasons for Grealish’s transfer.

“Jack wanted to make sure that if a Champions League team came in for him and Aston Villa wasn’t in the tournament, we wouldn’t stop him,” Purslow added.

“As a result, we decided to include a so-called release provision in the contract. We set the price at a level that we didn’t expect to be reached, but it represented his real worth to Villa.” Manchester City has said that they are ready to spend £100 million to activate the clause.

“When Jack eventually informed me his choice, it was a very emotional time for me, and I had no doubts about how difficult it had been for him to make the decision.”

Grealish ascension

Jack Grealish on his Villa debutIn 2014, Jack Grealish made his Aston Villa debut against Manchester City at Etihad Stadium as an 88th-minute replacement.

Grealish moved on loan to Notts County, then in League One, in 2013 to acquire senior experience after advancing through the Villa development system.

In May 2014, he made his Villa debut in a 4-0 loss to City and went on to make 17 Premier League appearances as Villa ended one place above the relegation zone.

He scored his first Premier League goal against Leicester City in September 2015 and appeared in 16 league games as Villa ended bottom of the table and were relegated to the Championship.

Grealish helped Villa win the play-off final against Derby County to reclaim their Premier League membership after three seasons in the Championship.

During the 2019-20 Premier League season, he made 36 appearances and scored eight goals, including one in a 1-1 tie against West Ham United on the last day of a season cut short by the coronavirus epidemic.

Grealish, a Republic of Ireland Under-21 international, declared his desire to play for England in 2015. He earned his senior England debut in a goalless draw against Denmark in September 2020, after switching to their Under-21 team.

Grealish scored six goals in 26 Premier League appearances for Villa last season, including two in a 7-2 victory against Liverpool.

From mid-February until mid-May, he was sidelined with an injury, but his comeback just before the conclusion of the season earned him a spot in England manager Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 team.

Grealish excelled in warm-up victories against Austria and Romania, and he played one start and four substitute appearances for England throughout the tournament, collecting two assists.

A ‘book-balancing exercise’ is assisting in the funding of the Grealish transaction.

Simon Stone of Sport provides an analysis.

For all the nudges about Manchester City’s spending and questions about how the club manages to do deals like this without breaking profit and sustainability rules, it’s worth noting that they are now responsible for the largest single purchase by an English club for only the second time during their Abu Dhabi ownership.

The first time was on that unforgettable night in 2008, when Sheikh Mansour embarked on an extensive scouting mission to show he was a serious player by spending £50 million for Brazil striker Robinho.

Manchester United has held the record seven times in the same time span. The Grealish deal has surpassed United’s £89 million acquisition of Paul Pogba in 2016.

Only Tottenham, one of City’s ‘big six’ competitors, has not spent a substantial amount on a single player during the epidemic, but United and Chelsea are the only teams that can legitimately be said to have spent such large sums over such a long period of time.

A book-balancing exercise is also under progress.

City sources claim that, including Leroy Sane’s move to Bayern Munich last summer and the £11 million they received as a sell-on payment from Borussia Dortmund’s sale of Jadon Sancho to Manchester United, the club has raised £109.5 million in the last 12 months, with another £55 million to come from the sale of younger players.

This does not include the high-paid Sergio Aguero’s transfer to Barcelona, nor the possible sales of larger stars before the transfer market ends, the most probable of which being Bernardo Silva’s desire to go to Spain.

Certain may question why this is relevant given that some teams will always have more money than others.

However, considering their recent spat with Uefa over Financial Fair Play, it’s natural that City are wary of disclosing their financial information.

However, the club seems to be in a different position than it was 20 years ago, when Kevin Keegan was attempting to re-invent himself. Eyal Berkovic, who joined them from Celtic for £1.5 million, was their notion of a big name at the time.
