Halle Bailey as Ariel Revealed, Disney’s The Little Mermaid Wraps Filming

Last week at the 2017 D23 Expo, Disney revealed the first image of Halle Bailey as Ariel, the heroine of The Little Mermaid. Bailey, who plays the part in the forthcoming live-action adaptation of the classic animated film, was introduced by her costar, Richard White, who plays Prince Eric. They said that Bailey’s portrayal of Ariel would be a “deeper” version of the heroine. Bailey also had to learn a new language while filming, since the film’s setting was in the U.K., and Bailey was not.

It’s been a decade since Disney debuted the first modern live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. And now the studio has wrapped filming on its latest version, featuring Disney Channel star and singer Halle Bailey in the title role of Ariel.

This is the end of our work on Disney’s The Little Mermaid. Starring Hallie Bailey as the new incarnation of Ariel, the live-action remake of the classic Disney animated film has been in development at the House of Mouse for several years. After being delayed by the pandemic, filming on the project is finally complete, Bailey announced, with the first official photo of her as Ariel. Bailey pointed this out via Twitter, and you can check out his post below.

and just like that… this is the end ❤️ Auditioned for this film at 18, just turned 19, and finished filming during the pandemic at 21…. we’ve finally done it….. I am immensely grateful to have experienced this film in all its glory….. pic.twitter.com/UtbyX5tS6a

In her tweet, Hallie Bailey wrote: And just like that… This is the end. I auditioned for this movie when I was 18 and almost 19, and I was 21 when I finished filming during the pandemic…. we finally made it. I am so grateful to have experienced this film in all its glory.

Rob Marshall is directing the film The Little Mermaid with singer Hallie Bailey in the role of Ariel. Other cast members include Jacob Tremblay (Flounder), Aquafina (Scuttle) and David Diggs (Sebastian). Jonah Hauer-King also plays Ariel’s love interest, Prince Eric, after it was announced that Harry Styles turned down the role. Melissa McCarthy will also play the villain, the sea witch Ursula, and Javier Bardem will play Ariel’s father, King Triton.

The singer, who is only 21, is best known as one half of the group Chloe x Halle with her sister Chow Bailey. They are signed to Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment label and have been nominated for five Grammy Awards. Since then, they have thrown themselves into acting. Both Baileys star in the Black-ish spin-off series, Grown-ish, whose fourth season recently began.

It’s one of the easiest decisions I’ve ever made, director Rob Marshall said of Bailey’s casting, according to the DGA. She came in and took over the role. You know, when you look for a character, you look for traits that are sometimes impossible to describe. And Ariel must have some kind of wonder of the world, plus a fiery spirit, plus an angelic voice, plus something other than the world, because she is not of this world. And she saw something for the first time.

Marshall added: You know, there are so many tired actors trying to play this. But to play something with such authenticity and magic, Halle had it, and no one else had it.

I feel like I’m in a dream, I’m just grateful and I’m not paying attention to the negativity, Bailey herself said about her casting, reports Variety. I feel like this role is bigger and more important than me, and that it’s going to be great. I am so happy to be a part of this.

For now, Disney has not yet set an official date for the premiere of The Little Mermaid. The House of Mouse has now released an image of the official logo, and Bailey’s new Twitter post gives us our first official look at the new Ariel, though photos from the set have already leaked. Either way, this live-action Disney remake is getting a lot of hype and should fill theaters when it comes out. This message is from Hallie Bailey.
