Antoine Griezmann could not hide his disappointment after Barcelona’s 3-2 defeat in extension against Athletic in Sunday’s Spanish Super Cup final.

The Frenchman scored twice in the match, but had to concede in the 93rd minute. Inaki Williams tied the score in the second minute. Barca ended the match with ten players after the late dismissal of Lionel Messi.

Griezmann spoke to Movistar after the game and made his anger at the defeat clear, according to Sport.

We’re angry, upset, irritated… everyone. That’s all I’m saying. If you lose the final, all feelings are bad. We know Marcelino’s teams work very hard and push very well. We made mistakes on the dead balls that we need to correct and we will work on that during the week. We didn’t play good defense, we didn’t talk… when the ball comes out of the court, someone has to shout.

Barca were on the verge of winning their first trophy under Ronald Koeman when Griezmann scored in the 77th minute. The minute scored the 2-1. However, Oscar de Marcos scored in the 90th minute. Williams equalised in the second minute and scored the spectacular winning goal in injury time.

Griezmann double

The defeat ends Barcelona’s nine-match unbeaten run and is a real setback, although Griezmann could gain some confidence if he continues to improve on his recent form.

The Frenchman has scored four goals and provided three assists in his last four games with Barcelona, after failing to score in eight matches with the Catalans.

Griezmann continued to score goals in the final.

However, there is no doubt that Griezmann’s performance is one of the few positives that Koeman and Barca can take from Sunday’s defeat.

Koeman reacts to defeat Barcelona

Koeman spoke after the final whistle about his side’s defeat and stressed that, despite the disappointment, missing out on the trophy was not a step backwards for his side, as Mark reported.

We are saddened and disappointed by the end result. We were playing to win. There are things we need to improve on defense. We need to get stronger in our neighborhood. To get closer to the enemy. I do my job, I give what I can.

I don’t think it’s a step backwards, but winning the final is useful to show you’re on the right track. We need time. For many players, participating in this final is an experience. We win things for the future. We did everything we could to win the final. We fought to the end. At the end everyone was very tired.

Barca and Koeman have little time to rest from their Copa del Rey adventure against Cornella next Thursday. The Barca boss is expected to rotate his squad and rest some players after extra time against Real Sociedad and Athletic.
