Daisy Ridley “would love” to play the role of Spider-Woman in the expanded universe of Spider-Man and revealed that she would “probably” tackle another successful post-Star Wars franchise. After Sony Pictures discovered a Spider-Woman film starring Alicia Vikander in Tomb Raider in February 2020, Ridley became the fan favorite for the role of spy Jessica Drew. Later in the year, Booksmart and Don’t Worry Darling director Olivia Wilde confirmed reports that she would be starring in the female-directed Spiderwoman film, after hinting that she would be involved in Spiderwoman, which would be part of Sony Pictures’ universe of Marvel characters adjacent to the MCU.
In an interview with USA Today’s best-selling author Saria Wilson prior to her new film Chaos Walking, in which Ridley plays alongside Spider-Man star Tom Holland, Ridley revealed that she was not familiar with casting rumors, but said she would “love to play Spider-Woman.” When asked if Spider-Woman would be part of an “expanded Spider-Man thing,” Ridley replied that she would “probably” be part of the emerging universe, which already includes Tom Hardy’s Venom and Jared Leto’s Morbius.
Wilson adds that Ridley is a known fan of Spider-Man: Into the Mirror, Sony’s animated film about Spider-Man on the other side of the multiverse that won an Oscar, and also a fan of WandaVision, Marvel Studios’ first original series now airing on Disney+.
I told her this could be the new Wonderful Universe and asked her if she would be so honest. She said, “Oh, yes, of course!” She told me about her friends doing franchises and how much content you can get on streaming services these days.

But she didn’t know about the rumors about Spiderwoman. She seemed excited about it, but I had to explain it to her. She hadn’t heard about it at all.

After Sony and Disney reached a five-film deal with Spider-Man, allowing Holland to relaunch Peter Parker into Marvel Cinematic Universe, and then extending that deal for the Spider-Man 3 film, which has not yet been christened, and the Marvel Studios film, which is coming, Wilde seemed to imply that his film Spider-Woman, which is also rumored to be plugged into the MCU :
“All I can say is that this is by far the most exciting thing that’s ever happened to me, because I can’t just tell a story….try to dodge Kevin Feige’s grenade launcher,” Wilde told EW in September about being the head of Marvel Studios, the producer behind Avengers: Endgame and WandaVision. “We’re seeing an incredible influx of female directors and storytellers who are filling the genre, the superhero world, with their own perspective.
In his secret film Sony-Marvel, Wilde added, “I don’t just approach the story as a director, I develop it, and that’s what makes it so incredible for me. I’m doing it with… Katie Silverman. She and I love doing all kinds of things together, but our love began with Booksmart. Knowing that we went from a high school girlfriend thing to this other stratosphere is just super exciting.”
Ridley and Holland are the next stars of Chaos Walking, which will be released by Lionsgate on March 5. Holland is back in the role of Spider-Man in the Sony and Marvel film Homecoming 3, due out December 17. Sony has not yet set a date for the famous Spider-Woman sprint.
