Cristiano Ronaldo scores his first goalManchester United’s Ronaldo scored two goals before and after halftime.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in his Manchester United comeback, as the Red Devils strolled to win against Newcastle United is a football club based in Newcastle in front of a raucous Old Trafford crowd.

Ronaldo returned the support in the greatest possible way, from the time he left the team coach on arrival at the stadium, through the warm-up, and then once the game had begun.

Ronaldo broke the deadlock in first-half extra time when visiting goalie Freddie Woodman fumbled Mason Greenwood’s effort, 12 years after he last scored for Manchester United at this stadium.

After Javier Manquillo’s equalizer, Ronaldo completed a fluid play by sprinting on to Luke Shaw’s through pass and smashing a low shot between Woodman’s legs.

Bruno Fernandes scored the game’s first goal after collecting a square ball from Paul Pogba and curling a shot into the top corner from the outside of the box, before substitute Jesse Lingard added a fourth in extra time.

Steve Bruce’s team had a narrow win margin despite playing brilliantly for extended stretches. Newcastle’s efforts, though, were unimportant to the jubilant home supporters, who had the additional pleasure of seeing their team return to the Premier League’s top spot.

At Old Trafford, it was a historic day.

It was obvious from the directors’ box that this was a momentous day for the hosts.

Both executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who hasn’t been seen since the Super League disaster, and co-chairman Avram Glazer, who was making his first visit to Old Trafford in two years, were in attendance.

Ronaldo’s return to the club from Juventus was aided by both Glazer and Woodward.

Sir Alex Ferguson, on the other hand, was probably even more influential in the transfer, pleading with the Portuguese to return to the club where he is still revered as a hero rather than accept an offer from Manchester City.

At the age of 36, Ronaldo demonstrated that he still has a lot to contribute, proving that the efforts to lure him back to the club were justified.

When the Newcastle defenders hesitated, he took advantage of the opportunity to follow Greenwood’s strike in.

The second demonstrated that Ronaldo still has the pace to create issues for opposing defenses as he raced clear to bring his Manchester United total to 120.

Despite never having played as a striker in the traditional sense, that is where he began – and where he mostly remained. He did dip deeper at times, but he was by far Manchester United’s most advanced player.

That meant the hosts had to look for broader crossing positions more frequently than a club with such talented technical players would. On this case, though, the goals justified the means.

There would be no repetition of his hat-trick against Newcastle United at Old Trafford in January 2008.

Nonetheless, with Fernandes scoring the kind of goal that has given him hero status at the club and Lingard demonstrating his talent while on loan at West Ham, it was a win that went beyond the contributions of a single player – even though Ronaldo’s name will dominate the post-match coverage.

Newcastle’s hopes were dashed.

For former Old Trafford captain Bruce, Ronaldo’s historic strike must have felt like a punch in the stomach.

Newcastle’s home record is poor, and the build-up to this game portrayed them as spoilers, attempting to ruin a party that had been building up all week.

Newcastle were superb thanks to a mix of solid defense, what might be politely termed as “time management” – which angered the home supporters much – and sharp counter-attacks.

Allan Saint-Maximin, Sean Longstaff, and Joe Willock all had chances to threaten David de Gea’s goal but were unable to defeat the home keeper.

With the half-time break approaching, Ronaldo’s goal undid all of the excellent effort, and it was completely avoidable.

When Greenwood took aim, Isaac Hayden was standing close to the Portuguese, but unlike Ronaldo, he didn’t bet on the result and was not in a position to dispute when Woodman made his error.

After capitalizing on a Harry Maguire error to convert a superb counter-attack – which ended with Saint-Maximin prodding a ball through for Manquillo’s second goal in English football – Newcastle redoubled their efforts after half-time, and for a brief moment, a second Old Trafford win since 1972 seemed possible.

As soon as Ronaldo returned to the center of the stage, the visitors’ shouts demanding change at the top of their club resurfaced.
