Baseball and softball return to action on Saturday the 20th. March, back. The Atascadero Greyhounds will open the season with a visit to the Morro Bay Pirates, while the Bearcats will welcome the Nipomo Titans to Barnhart Field for a single game.
All three softball teams start their season far away from home. Paso Robles plays in Nipomo, Atascadero plays in Morro Bay and Templeton travels to Santa Maria.
Participation in sports activities will be allowed on a case-by-case basis depending on the school, sport and space available. Some sports allow multiple family members to attend the games in person, others do not.
All three schools have live broadcasts of most upcoming sporting events for those who may not attend. Those looking to watch Bearcat games with full team and color commentary should follow 805 Broadcasters and Paso Sports Network Voice. Live and tape-delay broadcasts of Atascadero sports are available for select games and can be viewed on the school’s website, while Templeton will broadcast its games on the NFHS network. Templeton will broadcast football, basketball and volleyball and hopes to add basketball to that list.

North County high schools’ spring competitions are in full swing, with three more starting this weekend. Get ready to play football!
Atascadero
The Atascadero High School cross country team is back in action. They’re fighting the Titans in Nipomo. Atascadero and Nipomo ran a flat 2.5 mile course that produced excellent results for both boys and girls. The Greyhound girls defeated the Titans 40-71, while the boys lost 61-44, but without two captains.
The Greyhound girls were able to win thanks to strong running from Faith Rocha, who won her second consecutive game, Anna Archibald and Kelsey Rigby, who each finished in the top five. Rocha kept pace and led all runners with a time of 14:50. Archibald finished third with a time of 15:53, followed by Rigby who finished fifth with a time of 15:59. Amelia Lovo (16:19), who finished sixth, and Chelsea Hodultz (16:29), who finished seventh, completed the Hounds’ top five.
The boys competed on Sunday without senior captain Owen Fung or junior captain Tyson Rigby, but still had a strong team with four boys in the top 10. Atascadero was led Saturday by Kyle Shatwell (13:19), fourth, followed by Dane Hardy (13:25), fifth, Carl Walrod (13:58), seventh and Nathan Cooks (14:00), eighth.
Last week, the AHS girls played a game against Arroyo Grande and had to deal with a rain delay that was rescheduled for Monday. The Eagles handed the Hounds their first defeat of the season with a 5-3 victory. Atascadero’s Noella Breitenbach won her singles match 6-3, 6-0 to take third place, but the match of the day went to Kayla Stokes, who took sixth place. Stokes lost the first set 3-6 and won the next two 7-5 and 10-1 to secure the singles victory. The third point for Atascadero went to the doubles team of Kylie Sims and Nina Bedell, who won in two sets, 6-2, 6-4.

Templeton
The Templeton Eagle cross country teams were also in action last week. They took on Santa Maria High School, which has one of the best boys and girls teams in the area. Santa Maria remained undefeated 5-0 in boys competition and 4-1 in girls competition. In Santa Maria, the two teams ran 2.5 miles on the track and competed in a flat sprint, unlike normal cross country races that take runners over hills and valleys. Although Templeton ran hard, they failed. The boys lost to Santa Maria 35-24 and the girls 38-20.
The race of the day was between Eagle Bell’s Josh Bell, who just broke Templeton’s school record for two consecutive weeks, and St. John’s. Yair Torres. Runners raced around the course for most of the race, but were denied a photo finish when Torres collided with a teammate while trying to swim through the disorganized crowd of participants. Bell finished first overall with a time of 15:24 and finished in the top five with teammate Nick Jansen who finished fifth with a time of 17:13. Jayden Buck (17:28) and Max Chalexon (17:30) were seventh and eighth, respectively, while Nikita Norton (18:23) completed the Eagles’ top five.
The Templeton girls were again led by Maddie Bobbitt, who earned her fourth consecutive first place finish in the competition. Bobbitt led everyone in the race, finishing with a blistering time of 19:19. Second place went to Hannah McFarlane (21:41), followed by Ava Lawrence (22:37) in ninth place, Ashlyn Estes (22:49) in 10th place and Marianne Perez (23:07) in 11th place.
Templeton’s women’s tennis team did not return to action last week due to a penalty at Santa Maria.

Paso Robles
The Paso Robles water polo teams returned to action last week. The boys played against Bakersfield-Garces Memorial, while the girls took on Santa Ynez. The Lady Bearcats fell behind early, but fought back before eventually losing 10-7 to the Pirates. Offensively, the girls were led by Allison Hernandez who scored five goals in goal.

The boys faced a strong team and Team Grace and lost 26-8. The Bearcats’ offense was led by Tre Eade and Cole Eberhardt, who each scored two goals. Michael Brown, Jacob Beyer, Ethan Vitale and Cameron Clayton each scored a goal as well.
The Paso Robles tennis team also started the season, but both matches were cancelled last week due to rain. The girls are 0-2 on the young season so far after a pair of very narrow losses against the Greyhounds two weeks ago. Paso Robles lost the first game 4-5 and the second game 3-6. Although the Bearcats lost both games, No. 1 remained in the game. 1 Abby Reimer undefeated. She won the first match 6-1, 6-1 and the second 6-0, 6-2.
