mollyfamwatI’ve never been a huge fan of the women’s football at the Olympics, but that didn’t stop me from watching the Sweden vs. USA women’s football game. I’ll make a confession: I’m a soccer fan, but I’m not really sure I even know what the women’s game is in the first place. However, the US women’s team has been awful in recent years, so I felt this was a wake-up call for US women’s soccer.
Sweden’s women’s football team opened up their Olympic campaign in style. In a hotly-contested match against the USA, the Swedes emerged as 2-1 winners.
Sweden’s team had never played a game before but went on to beat the USA. The game was the first women’s Olympic football match in the history of the Olympic Games. The Swedish team was made up of players with different levels of experience. The USA’s team, on the other hand, had stars like Alex Morgan and Abby Wambach.. Megan Rapinoe, a forward for the United States, claimed they “got bopped” and did “stupid things” in their Olympic Games opener against Sweden.
Sweden defeated the world champions 3-0 in Tokyo, with striker Stina Blackstenius scoring twice and substitute Lina Hurtig adding a third.
Coming into the Olympics, the USA had gone 44 games without losing.
Rapinoe stated, “I felt we were a little bit anxious, a little bit tight, doing stupid things.”
The USA began with important players Rose Lavelle, Sam Mewis, Alex Morgan, Tobin Heath, and Lindsey Horan, while Sweden was missing Chelsea captain Magdalena Eriksson.
In the quarter-finals five years ago, the United States were eliminated on penalties by Sweden, who went on to earn silver.
“It’s clear we dug ourselves in a huge hole,” US coach Vlatko Andonovski said, “but we’re the only ones who can pull ourselves out of it.”
“It isn’t going to be simple. We need to win the next two games, but the fact that there is still a possibility means I know this squad isn’t going to give up.”

Zambia, rated 104th in the world, defeated 10-3 against European champions the Netherlands in their Olympic debut in women’s football.
Vivianne Miedema, an Arsenal striker, scored four goals, while ex-Gunners teammate Danielle van de Donk contributed three assists.
Despite being on the losing side, Zambia captain Barbra Banda scored a hat-trick.
Brazil trounced China 5-0, with striker Marta scoring twice.
She became the first player to score in five straight Olympics, bringing her total to 12, while 43-year-old defender Formiga extended her record of participating in all seven women’s Olympic games since 1996.
Team GB got off to a winning start with a 2-0 victory against Chile in their Group E opening, courtesy to a double from Ellen White.
In the second Group E encounter, Japan tied 1-1 with Canada when Mana Iwabuchi, an Arsenal midfielder, equalized Christine Sinclair’s goal. Stephanie Labbe, a goalie for Canada, also made a penalty save.
Sinclair now has 187 international goals to her name and is just the fourth player in history to participate in 300 games for her country.
In the day’s last encounter, Australia defeated New Zealand 2-1, with Chelsea striker Sam Kerr scoring one goal and assisting on the other.
