Sinead O’Connor retires from music industry as she hangs up nipple tassels

Sinead O’Connor has announced a retirement from the music industry, saying she no longer wants to be in the business of being a popstar. “I don’t want to be a popstar,” said the singer in a news release, “I now want to be a human being.” The news came after reports of a falling out between O’Connor and her record label, but she considered the decision before going public with it, according to the announcement.

A short essay by one of the most polarising figures in pop music history, and one who has spent the last few years on the fringes of music industry.

Sinead O’Connor is a popular singer and songwriter who rose to prominence in the early 1980s. She moved from Ireland to London in the mid-1980s to pursue a career in music, after recording an album of original songs with her first band, The Iveagh Hounds. Her first single, “Nothing Compares 2 U”, became a hit, and it was followed by a string of top ten hits in the U.S. and around the world. Her fourth studio album, I’m Not Bossy, I’m the Boss, was the first of her albums to reach number one in the U.S., and in the U.K. (her first to do so).

The 54-year-old Nothing Compares 2 U singer has been singing since she was a teenager and released her first album, The Lion and the Cobra, in 1987. However, she has announced her farewell to music – her next album No Veteran Dies Alone will be her last. She took to Twitter and wrote: This is an announcement of my retirement from touring and recording. I was getting old and tired. It’s time to put the tassels on your nipples and give it your all. NVDA in 2022 will be my last release. And there will be no more tours, no more promos. I’m announcing that I’m quitting touring and the record industry. I was getting old and tired.
