Liverpool’s unbeaten run in the Premier League ended in the 68th minute. The game ended in the 58th minute when Ashley Barnes scored the late winner from the penalty spot to secure Burnley’s famous victory.
Goalkeeper Alisson knocked Barnes down in the seventh minute and converted the resulting penalty kick to tie the game.
Liverpool’s last league defeat at Anfield came almost four years ago, against Crystal Palace in April 2017. At the halfway point of the season, the team is six points behind Manchester United.
Divock Origi came on for his first appearance of the season and should have scored when he ran at goal after a mistake by Ben Mee but hit the bar.
In the second half, the hosts pressed for the first goal, but they lacked ideas. Nick Pope made a big save to prevent Mohamed Salah and his teammate Roberto Firmino from throwing the ball into the net.
The surprise victory moved Burnley up to 16th in the standings, seven points clear of the relegation zone.

Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp said before the game that he was not worried about his team’s poor form, but the latest setback means it has now become a real problem.
After 19 games, Liverpool are fractured and unstable, have not scored in the last 440 minutes in the first division and are looking for their first win in 2021.
The 19th. In December they looked like they could score a goal in their 7-0 win over Crystal Palace, but they haven’t won since and have scored just one goal in the Championship against relegation candidates West Brom.
The fact that they were eliminated in the same place last season is extraordinary. After 19 games last season the Reds had a 13 point lead with 55 points, now they are 21 points behind.
Apart from Pope’s saves on Sale and those of Origi and Trent Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool didn’t look like a team that put itself in danger in front of goal.
They had 72 per cent possession, but most were slow and heavy, and although they had wide gaps and put 30 crosses into the goal, Burnley’s determined defenders made a header and cracked every ball that came in.

Liverpool have won 18 of their 19 league games at Anfield since becoming champions last season.
Burnley were the spoilers on that occasion – they drew 1-1 in July 2020 – and backed up their claim with another solid and well-organised performance.
Captain Mee had 14 clearances and two assists, while center fielder James Tarkowski had five steals and four scores.
The Burnleys are a well-oiled team and know their limits. He likes to sit back and absorb the pressure before trying his luck with the counterattack.
They were in control of the opposition but couldn’t get the last ball out properly, and as Barnes forced Alisson to make a big stop, the assistant referee took him out of the game.
With just 10 goals – tied at the bottom of the Sheffield United table – they remain the most prolific team in the league, but their defensive tenacity means they are still a threat even to the biggest teams.

- It was Burnley’s second Premier League away game against the defending champions (also at Chelsea in August 2017). In fact, Burnley are the only team since the 2017-18 season to have won two away games against the reigning English champions.
- For the first time since May 2000, Liverpool have not scored in four league games. Since Sadio Mane’s 12th minute goal against West Brom 25 days ago, the Reds have taken a total of 87 shots.
- Jurgen Klopp played four league games from November to December 2006 without scoring with his Mainz team in the Bundesliga.

- Liverpool fired 27 shots without scoring against Burnley, the most shots without scoring in a league game since April 2013 against Reading (28) and the most at Anfield since April 2012 against West Brom (30).
- Ashley Barnes’ penalty for Burnley was her first Premier League goal in 11 away games since her goal against Watford in November 2019.
- Since the start of last season, no goalkeeper has made more saves against a single Premier League opponent than Burnley’s Nick Pope against Liverpool (19). Pope has made 14 saves in his last two games at Anfield, including six tonight.
