Isaiah Thomas Drops 81 Points, Reignites Celtics Reunion Talks

At the trade deadline, the Celtics were in discussions with the Cavaliers about a Thomas trade, but the deal fell through at the last minute because of medical concerns. A few days after the deadline, Thomas spoke to reporters for the first time since rumors of a trade started to leak. In the interview, Thomas said he was surprised by the trade talks at first, but he quickly realized the Cavs wanted to make a trade for him.

Celtics fans were nearly giddy on Wednesday when they heard that forward Isaiah Thomas had made a decision on his future. He chose to return to the Boston Celtics for the 2018-19 season, and according to sources, the deal is expected to be for the $6.3 million veteran’s minimum. This is a big win for Celtics fans, as Thomas will be back in the fold after a brief stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The move also re-ignites discussion of a potential Celtics reunion, as Thomas and fellow Celtics star Kyrie Irving are said to have had conversations on the topic.

The Boston Celtics and the Cleveland Cavaliers are the current Eastern Conference rivals, as both teams are looking to become the 2017 NBA Champions. Over the past few years, both franchises have been involved in numerous trade discussions, as both teams have the desire of improving their chances for a title. With the Celtics being in the Eastern Conference finals for the past two years, and with many players being up for free agency this summer, including Kyrie Irving and Al Horford, the Cavaliers acquired Celtics backup point guard, Isaiah Thomas, in a trade earlier this week.. Isaiah Thomas drops 81 points, fuels Celtics reunion talks

Even if it wasn’t on the NBA floor, 81 points are still 81 points.

This past weekend in Seattle, Isaiah Thomas strapped on his Nike Kobe 6 Protro “BHM,” channeled his Black Mamba mindset, and reminded the world that the former two-time All-Star can still put the ball in the hoop.

Thomas scored 40 points before halftime in Jamal Crawford’s The Crawsover Pro-Am League, and 81 points by the conclusion of regulation – eerily similar to Kobe Bryant’s all-time 81-point effort against the Toronto Raptors in 2006.

During his amazing performance, Thomas not only dropped buckets, but also corpses. By way of Bleacher Report and BallisLife, here’s a look at this vicious crossover and a few jaw-dropping plays that enthralled the audience and further immortalized Thomas’ performance:

Thomas’ performance came only days after the 32-year-old used Twitter to reflect on the death of his late-great buddy.

The Most Up-to-Date Information on the Thomas-Celtics Reunion Talks

Thomas’ 81-point performance comes only one week after a 65-point performance in an Atlantic Pro-Am match. The latter is what sparked speculation that the 2017 All-NBA second-team pick could reunite with his old club, the Celtics.

Longtime NBA writer Marc Stein said, “Boston, I’m told, has interest in an Isaiah Thomas reunion, with new Celtics head of basketball operations Brad Stevens known to be one of Thomas’ greatest admirers,” presumably giving pleasure to many Celtics fans.

Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated, on the other hand, immediately rained on the celebration. Mannix pushed back on the idea that the Celtics would be interested in signing Thomas, saying, “I just don’t see how he ends up back in Boston,” on WEEI’s Ordway, Merloni, and Fauria Show.

“Isaiah Thomas has a special place in Brad Stevens’ heart because of what he accomplished for that club in 2017 — playing injured and leading them to the conference finals. He told Boston.com, “There’s certainly a connection there.” “The issue is that we have a fairly solid idea of what Isaiah is capable of as a basketball player right now. He’s simply not the same player he was in Boston during his greatest years.”

Fans want Thomas to sign with the Celtics because there is still a need at point guard.

If contract negotiations with Dennis Schroder go well, Thomas’ chances of signing with the Celtics are little to none. Even if they don’t, Boston is expected to be happy with Payton Pritchard coming off the bench as the team’s first guard behind presumed starter Marcus Smart.

Despite the fact that the odds of a Thomas reunion remain low, Celtics supporters have come out of the woodwork to lobby for the team to take another shot at their former MVP contender.

So you’re saying @isaiahthomas scored 81 points and the Celtics haven’t signed him yet? What does he need to lose 100 pounds? Brad, hurry up before the price rises!
