In the early 1900s the possibility of a player scoring a goal in all 7 games in a single international seemed like a dream. In the past century, the desire to aggregate goals based on a single player’s performance in various competitions to establish a single goal-scoring record was considered a great honor. But no longer. In a recent list of the world’s best footballers, Cristiano Ronaldo has set a record that will not be broken in the near future. The 32-year-old Portuguese striker’s tally of 79 goals in 91 appearances to date is a record that will stand for a very long time.
Break the news to the world that Cristiano Ronaldo has broken the record for most goals scored in international matches.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s latest hat trick was the 10th time he has scored three or more goals in a single game, making the Real Madrid player the first man to score 10 hat tricks in a single international football competition. The 36-year-old, who returned to Manchester United from Juventus last month in a surprise late-summer transfer window deal, scored his 110th (and 111th) goal for his country in a thrilling 2-1 victory against the Republic of Ireland in Faro on Wednesday in his 180th senior international appearance.
After having an early penalty saved by Ireland’s Gavin Bazunu, Ronaldo scored two almost similar headers in the 89th minute to turn the game around for Portugal. The first came from an unmarked Goncalo Guedes cross, while the second came from a Joao Mario pass in the sixth minute of injury time, both coming in from the right wing. Following the second goal, he was booked for excessive celebrating.
With the second of his two penalties against France in a Euro 2020 group stage encounter in Budapest, Ronaldo had equalized with Daei. Daei, who scored 109 goals in 149 appearances over a 13-year international career before retiring in 2007, paid a special homage to Ronaldo on social media after the 2-2 tie.
“I am pleased that this amazing accomplishment will belong to Ronaldo — a brilliant football champion and compassionate humanist who inspires and affects people all around the globe,” the 52-year-old stated.
Ronaldo still has a long way to go to catch up to the best female international goal scorer: Christine Sinclair has 187 goals in 304 games, the most recent of which came this summer when she helped Canada win gold at the Tokyo Olympics. Still, his newest success is amazing, and it can be added to his incredibly lengthy list of game-changing accomplishments.

Portugal has been at the top for 18 years.
Ronaldo has had an incredible career, progressing from a wiry winger at Sporting Lisbon and Manchester United to a potent goal-scoring machine at Real Madrid and Juventus. His objectives for Portugal, on the other hand, have been consistent virtually from the beginning.
Ronaldo’s first international goal came against Greece in the first round of Euro 2004 after making his senior debut in 2003. He has averaged 6.47 goals each calendar year for his nation since then.

His 14 goals in a calendar year, which included a hat trick against Switzerland in June, a four-goal haul against Lithuania in September, and another hat trick against Lithuania two months later, were the most he’d ever scored in a calendar year.
Since turning 30 in February 2015, Ronaldo has scored 59 goals for Portugal in 62 appearances, demonstrating that age is no barrier. He’d only scored 52 goals in 118 games before to then.

Before you get all worked up about his set-piece responsibilities giving him more opportunities to score, keep in mind that just 14 of his international goals have come from the penalty spot. He’s also scored 10 goals from direct free kicks, the most notable of which was a late goal that earned a 3-3 draw against Spain in the 2018 World Cup’s first group game. In that drama in Sochi, Ronaldo, of course, scored all three goals for his team.
