Cowboys Sign TE Ian Bunting to Practice Squad

Cowboys Sign TE Ian Bunting to Practice Squad

Ian Bunting is currently a member of the New Orleans Saints practice squad, but he looks to be headed back to Dallas. Ian just missed out on making the Cowboys 53-man roster earlier this year but will now join the team’s practice squad for the rest of the season. Ian went undrafted in 2015, but came out of nowhere to make the practice squad with the Dallas Cowboys, where he has spent the last couple of weeks.

Ian Bunting was one of the backup tight ends on the Cowboys final roster last year. After losing Jimmy Graham for the season, the Cowboys reassigned Bunting to the practice squad. He has since been promoted to the 53-man roster.

Ian Bunting has 15 NFL games under his belt, playing mostly into the third quarter of last season. He was, however, the first tight end drafted by the Cowboys in the last decade. But will he be the last? Or will there be another TE drafted by the team? Today, Ian Bunting found out that the Cowboys have signed him to the practice squad.. One of the NFL’s tallest pass-catchers has joined the Dallas Cowboys.

The club announced the addition of 6-foot-7 tight end Ian Bunting, an outside signing for Dallas’ 16-man practice squad, on Thursday.

Aaron Wilson, a league insider, broke the news of Bunting’s signing on Wednesday.

Bunting joins Jeremy Sprinkle as the second tight end to join the Cowboys’ taxi squad. QB Ben DiNucci, running back JaQuan Hardy, fullback Nick Ralston, wide receivers Osirus Mitchell and Brandon Smith, offensive lineman Isaac Alarcón (an International Pathway Program participant who does not count against the allotment), center Braylon Jones, defensive end Austin Faoliu, defensive tackle Justin Hamilton, cornerback Kyron Brown, and safety Darian Thomps were all signed by the team.

The Cowboys also made a flurry of procedural changes on Thursday, bringing back WR CeeDee Lamb, DT Carlos Watkins, and S Damontae Kazee off the reserve/COVID-19 list and bringing in new RB Corey Clement and main long snapper Jake McQuaide.

Dallas placed six players on the injured reserve list in a similar move: OT Josh Ball, WR Malik Turner, TE Sean McKeon, DT Neville Gallimore, LB Francis Bernard, and CB Kelvin Joseph. According to NFL regulations, these players will miss the first three regular-season games before being allowed to return.

Bunting Background

After a cup of coffee with the Seattle Seahawks, who released him during final cuts Tuesday, the 25-year-old first-year pro lands in Dallas. Bunting was not selected by the NFL in 2019 and has yet to play in a game.

Bunting played his last year of college football at California, where he caught 18 receptions for 195 yards. He started his career at Michigan, where he totaled 124 yards on 11 receptions in nine games.

In an interview with The Daily Californian in 2018, then-Cal offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin said of Bunting, “It’s great to have anybody who can contribute something new.” “Ian has done so and will continue to do so, and it’s not only because of the amount of receptions or blocks he’s made. He fits in the locker room and with his teammates, something I really value in Ian.”
