A group of counties in the Bay Area announced Friday that they will act with harsh new restrictions to try to contain the coronavirus when it reappears in California, instead of waiting for the state to order its closure.
Health officials from Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco and Santa Clara counties and the city of Berkeley jointly announced that they will comply with a state ordinance on home care this weekend and will not wait for their intensive care units to be completed, as the government said in its directive issued Thursday.
The virus is spreading faster in the city than ever before, San Francisco Health Director Dr. Grant Colfax told a briefing Friday afternoon. We need to deal with this virus as soon as possible.
At the current rate of hospital admissions, the San Francisco hospital beds will be exhausted on Boxing Day, Dr. Colfax said.

An outbreak of the virus that killed 21 residents of a veteran home in New Hampshire illustrates a growing wave of new cases in the Northeast and Central Atlantic, exceeding the maximum levels seen in many places in the spring.
In the first eight and a half months of the pandemic, there have been no cases at Tilton’s New Hampshire Veterans’ House, Sununu said at a press conference Thursday. Bahrain was the second country to grant emergency approval for Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine on Friday, the Bahraini news agency told the government.
The small Gulf Kingdom, an oil-dependent country with a large number of low-paid migrant workers, has one of the highest per capita coronavirus rates in the world, according to the New York Times.
On Wednesday, Great Britain became the first country to approve Pfizer’s vaccine, a product of the collaboration with the German BioNTech. No country had yet approved a fully tested coronavirus vaccine.
Britain and Bahrain, which beat the United States for the emergency approval of a vaccine developed by an American company, could increase the pressure on American regulators, who have been criticized for not acting faster to get the doses to the people. (On Friday morning, Dr. Stephen M. Khan, director of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, said he hoped the agency would approve the vaccine after the December 10 advisory committee meeting).
Russia and China have approved other coronavirus vaccines without waiting for large-scale efficacy trials, and last month Bahrain approved the use of vaccine from China’s Sinopharm for frontline workers.
Pfizer’s double-dose vaccine needs to be stored at extremely low temperatures, making it difficult to transport worldwide. Pfizer expects to deliver up to 50 million doses of vaccine by the end of the year.
The adoption in Bahrain will add another important layer to the national response of the Covid-19 Kingdom, which gives priority to protecting the health of all citizens and residents during the pandemic, said Dr Mariam Al Jalahma, Executive Director of the National Health Inspectorate of the country.

With coronavirus infections on the rise across the country, federal health officials on Friday urged state and local governments to implement 10 essential public health measures, including the widespread use of face masks outside the home.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines also call for the isolation of people exposed to or infected with the virus from others; increased testing for the coronavirus, especially for employees who come into contact with the public or people at risk in the course of their work; priority for following up contacts and investigating cases; protection of high-risk individuals and key employees; and postponement of travel.
The agency also urged communities to make plans for the distribution and use of vaccines as soon as they become available.
While the Agency has made all the recommendations on parts of previous guidelines, the new summary issued on Friday is the first time the C.D.C. has published a full list of strategies.

The document attaches great importance to the fact that schools should be able to offer education from kindergarten to the twelfth grade. Schools should be closed last and reopened first, because they play a crucial role in providing nutrition and support services to children and because school closures have a disproportionate impact on low-income families.

Washington State health officials said the recent deaths of seven residents of nursing homes in the eastern part of the state may be linked to a marriage that took place last month, contrary to Coronavirus security recommendations.
The Grant County Healthcare District announced in a press release that approximately 300 people attending the wedding on March 7-8 will attend the ceremony. A number of people attended the meeting in November near Ritzville, Washington, apparently including several long-term care workers in the area who recently reported the death of Covid-19.
Officials of the province reported that in four 20th century communities the number of people in the area was about one million. Around November, about two weeks after the wedding, outbreaks of the coronavirus started. Two of the outbreaks appear to be directly related to the marriage, while the third is still under investigation, said Teresa Adkinson, administrator of the Grant County Health District. New Jersey limits the number of people gathering indoors during the pandemic to ten. The exception for religious and political activities protected by the first amendment allows meetings to be held in closed rooms up to 25% of the room capacity or 150 people, whichever is less. Internal meetings of more than 10 people without masks and without social distance are forbidden.
On Friday, the restaurant was closed by the Jersey City Department of Health and Social Services, which has asked the Marine Park Administration to submit a plan indicating how it will fill government capacity and mask orders.
A handful of restaurants in Washington state are ignoring medical orders to close indoor restaurants as a result of the coronavirus outbreak, and in at least one case, according to the restaurant owner, the business is booming. According to the owner, customers come for political reasons, in the same or greater extent as they come to eat.
The vast majority of people are protesting the governor, said Rod Samuelson, owner of Spiffy’s restaurant, which reopened for dinner Monday in Chehalis, about 100 miles south of Seattle. Tim Church, a Washington State Department spokesman for Labor and Industry, said he is aware of at least four restaurants that have reopened or have remained open after Jay’s Inseley state government closed until them last month, although there may be more as his agency operates largely on the basis of complaints received.
The state went to court earlier this week and received a restraining order from a district judge against a restaurant north of Seattle that refused to close – the first time since the pandemic began, the Church said.
Brian Robbins, the manager of the restaurant south of the state capital, Olympia, said he visited Spiffith earlier this week and was inspired to reopen his own establishment, the Farm Boy Drive-In, on Wednesday. In his interview, Mr. Robbins stressed that he was not unaware of Mr. Inseley’s order, but that he turned his restaurant into a closed public meeting place, authorised on medical prescription, but with strict restrictions.
M. Robbins said the written message posted on Farm Boy’s front door indicated that visitors had to follow the instructions given last month by the governor at the closed public gathering that people from individual households had to be symptom-free and undergo an updated coronavirus test or quarantine within 14 days of the gathering.
However, according to Robbins, employees do not need medical records or other evidence, as this would violate data protection laws.

In Miami-Dade County, Florida, coronavirus infections are rising at an alarming rate and, on Friday, government and hospital officials are calling with people to stay home for the holidays and follow guidelines on masks, hand washing and social distance.
In the last two months, the number of Kovid-19 hospitals in the district has more than doubled to 850, and positive test results have almost doubled to 9.77%.

Hospital authorities in this and neighboring Broward County, like many others in the country, warn that the virus is so widespread that no medical help is available. For example, the mobile Miami-Dade and Broward nurses, who could bring the July peak, have already been deployed elsewhere.
The peak that occurred then should not be repeated, said Aurelio M. Fernandez III, executive director of Memorial Healthcare System, which serves South Florida. There aren’t enough resources. In September, the Republican government Ron DeSantis signed an executive order prohibiting the execution of orders for masks, curfews and other measures, so local officials can do little more than ask people to obey orders. The regulation also prohibits local authorities from closing factories and limits the possibilities for companies to reduce their internal capacity. This week, DeSantis reiterated that in a state that – along with Texas and California alone – had contracted over a million infections, there would be no fines, no closures and no school closures.
However, Miami-Dade has a mandate for camouflage and curfew, and the police have given clues about violations they hope to use at some point. Levin Kawa, the new mayor who took office last month and tested positive for the virus, said her office is planning a public campaign asking for the cooperation of citizens in enforcing the rules and taking the test.
He also indicated that the Miami-Dade County League of Cities intends to send a letter urging Mr DeSantis to return power to the local authorities as the number of cases in their area increases. As for her own condition, Mrs. Levin Cava, who seemed upset, said her symptoms were mild, but she called the virus a monster.

Vice President Mike Pence visited the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Friday and gave an optimistic assessment of the coronavirus pandemic with what is likely to be the first coronavirus vaccine to be approved next week.
First of all, on behalf of President Donald Trump and all members of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, I would like to thank you. Thanks to the men and women in D.C. who have literally given their lives over the past ten months to save lives all over America. We are in a difficult situation during this pandemic. And each of us has a role to play – washing our hands, distancing ourselves from society, wearing a mask when we are designated. But we also have a season of hope. To be what we are, Bob, we may only be a week and a half away from what the likely claim of the first coronavirus vaccine for the American people would be. She’s an inspiration to the people of this country. We give priority to our seniors and employees in our long-term care institutions. And we will also give priority to health workers so that we can continue – not only to put their health first – but also to ensure that our hospitals, our clinics, are staffed to help Americans who are still suffering from this pandemic.

Scientists from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned Friday that despite the development of a vaccine against the coronavirus, the pandemic remains a devastating threat – especially to healthcare workers and hospital systems collapsing under the pressure of an epidemic.
Hospital admissions continue to increase, and that’s a real problem, says Dr. Henry Walk, who heads the CDC’s Department of Preparedness and Emerging Infections. Health care personnel are overstretched, beds are full.
In an effort to make things more optimistic, Pence said that America is going through a difficult time, but it’s also a time of hope.
The visit to the agency’s Atlanta headquarters, which was broadcast live on the White House website, was not so much about what was said, but who said it. Since Dr. Nancy Messonier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, informed reporters about the impending pandemic and warned that the disruptions to daily life, including school and business closures, could be serious, CDC career scientists have remained largely out of the public eye.
President Trump, who declared a national state of emergency a few weeks later, was outraged and reportedly threatened to remove them from office.
