Five-star guard Trevor Keels committed to Duke Basketball Friday afternoon, giving the Blue Devils their third five-star prospect in the Class of 2021.
Keels preferred coach Mike Krzyzewski’s program to the final selection, which included Virginia, Villanova and Kentucky.
Coach Kay and I have a great relationship, Keels told ESPN. It was the same throughout. Heterosexual. He told me what I needed to hear. He told me to change my body. Yeah, and now I’m lighter and more explosive.
My game isn’t over yet. I hope Coach K and Duke help me reach my goal of playing in the NBA. I don’t just watch the NBA. I’m focused on the Duke team and winning college basketball games.

The 6-foot-6 shooting guard from Paul VI High School in Northern Virginia is ranked 19th on ESPN’s 100 in 2021 and is the fourth-best shooter nationally. He played at the base level with the Takeover team and averaged 10.9 points per game in the spring and summer of 2019. Keels scored multiple points during the school season and averaged 25 points in two games at the NIBC Invitational in January.
Keels joins frontcourt players Paolo Banchero (No. 3) and A.J. Griffin (No. 14) among the five-star players in Duke’s Class of 2021,
Paolo Banchero has since recruited me, says Keels. He may be a lottery player, but he cares more about winning. That’s what I am.
Keels will also team up with a former Paul VI teammate when he arrives in Durham. That would be point guard Jeremy Roach, who started 18 games as a freshman this season.
He was tall, Keels said, Roach was at Duke. I played with him for four years and we were successful. He’s a competitor. I learned from him in Paul VI. There’s been a lot of talk about Duke. He was honest about everything. I trust him, both in and out of court.
Keels is a highly competitive player with impressive basketball instincts. He immediately brings the Duke fill of an outside linebacker who has good chemistry with Roach. Keels has a college-ready body, and his strength allows him to finish in contact and prevent defenders from dribbling. He puts the best pressure on the defense with his constant jumping. He shows little to no movement in his offense, which makes him effective and efficient. He can get to the 3-point line in transition, while Keels is more than just a scorer in the half court; he’s a scorer who can read his man and take advantage of the off-ball or score.
Keels replaces Blue Devils’ DJ Stewart, who left Thursday for the NBA Draft after one season. Krzyzewski has also already lost former five-star candidate Jalen Johnson for the rest of the season, and top scorer Matthew Hurt is a top-50 NBA draft pick and could also be leaving the NBA. Jordan Goldwire, Jamin Brakefield and Patrick Tape have entered the transfer gate.
