While the Bucks haven’t been particularly active in the NBA Draft over the last few years, they have had quite a few second round picks. Some of them have been solid contributors and some of them were complete washouts. The 2021 Draft is shaping up to be no different, with the Bucks having their lone pick, which will be the last of their five selections. This would be the third straight year with only one selection, and the second straight year that it would be the first pick of their next draft.
Prior to the NBA draft, the Bucks hold the worst record in the league at 15-45, and have had a string of bad luck with lottery picks. Now, with the last pick in the draft, the Bucks have a chance to select a potential franchise player; here’s how I grade their last-ditch pick.
The Milwaukee Bucks are in good shape heading into free agency in 2021 as NBA champions. In the NBA draft of 2021, they didn’t have to do much.
They’ve had a great start to their offseason as well. Despite losing PJ Tucker to the Heat, they were able to re-sign Bobby Portis and add Torrey Craig, George Hill, Rodney Hood, and Seme Ojeleye, as well as pull off a Grayson Allen deal.
Despite the Bucks’ free agency activities, the draft night was rather calm for them. The Bucks decided to add additional size by selecting Sandro Mamukelashvili from the NBA G-Wisconsin League’s Herd with their lone selection in the 2021 NBA Draft. NBA draft grade for the Bucks:
Sandro Mamukelashvili, power forward/center: B
With lots of alternatives at both forward positions, this acquisition looked a little strange, but considering the Bucks’ lack of depth at center, it was a smart move by the front office. The Bucks don’t have another true center on the roster except Brook Lopez and Giannis Antetokounmpo, who alternate between power forward and center. Sandro Mamukelashvili provides them another center option who can also play power forward on occasion.
Mamukelashvili, on the other hand, will most likely remain a behind-the-scenes player in development for the duration of the 2021-22 NBA season, as the Bucks’ roster is already almost full, leaving little space for the rookie center to play significant minutes. On the other hand, Sandro provides them with a potential building block and may be their next great center if Brook Lopez retires or chooses to end his career elsewhere.
Sandro earned Big East Player of the Year honors during his senior year at Seton Hall, averaging 17.5 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. Sandro showed a lot of promise as a multi-talented big man who could spread the floor, rebound consistently, and finish hard at the basket.
Given the Bucks’ current frontcourt, which includes Giannis, Lopez, Khris Middleton, Rodney Hood, Bobby Portis, Torrey Craig, and Seme Ojeyele, it may be some time before Sandro sees significant playing time. Sandro Mamukelashvili, on the other hand, has the potential to develop into the Bucks’ next great center, forming an exciting new big man tandem with Giannis and assisting him in leading the Bucks to further championship runs in the later part of his career.
Meanwhile, Sandro will most likely return to the Wisconsin Herd, the Bucks’ G-League club, where he had been playing before to being selected by Milwaukee. With the Bucks expected to contend for many championships over the next decade, this is a draft choice that provides them with another foundation for the future of their organization as well as some security when it comes to starting a new chapter.
The Bucks have the #23 overall pick in the upcoming NBA draft. They have the opportunity to add a solid prospect to their roster who can develop into a solid contributor for years to come.
