Everton 0-2 Fulham: Josh Maja brace boosts Fulham’s survival hopes

Josh Maja scores with his first penalty kick for Fulham.

Josh Maia made his Fulham debut in a corset. The Cottagers strengthened their hopes of Premier League survival with a deserved victory over Everton.

The visitors were much better in the first half, but disappointed as they missed several chances to score: Bobby Decordova-Reid hit the post and Harrison Reed led off.

But their dominance was rewarded in the second half when Maya – on his last day on loan from Bordeaux – slid in from close range and headed Ola Aina’s cross into the net.

Maya then made her dream debut for the second time after a shot by Decordova-Reid hit the woodwork.

Everton were poor throughout the game and although Seamus Coleman only hit the ball at the far post in the first half, it rarely looked like he would score.

King Joshua finally put the ball in the net, but he was caught off guard.

Fulham still have a long way to go to avoid relegation and this win will narrow the gap to seven points, but it will significantly boost their hopes of getting out of trouble.

Everton’s defeat leaves them seventh with 37 points.

Maya provides the Fulham spark we missed

Victory was needed for a Fulham team who have played many games this season, but their inability to convert chances into goals has meant they have rarely received the reward their performances deserved.

Last time out, against West Ham, they had 20 shots on goal, but only two of those hit the target. So they had to settle for a disappointing draw, and it looks like that pattern will continue in this match, as they missed many chances in the first half.

But with Aleksandar Mitrovic barely scoring this season, Fulham lacked a striker who can finish most of the chances he created – but these performances suggest Maya could be the man for the job.

None of the former Sunderland striker’s goals were fantastic, but he was mostly in the right place at the right time to put the ball in the net.

Maya’s influence and that result could give Fulham the spark it needs to get out of the relegation zone.

What’s the next step?

Everton take on Premier League leader Manchester City on Wednesday (20:15 GMT), while Fulham travel to Burnley on the same day (18:00 GMT).
