The ROG Phone 5 is Asus’ fourth-generation gaming smartphone, and it looks like the company is moving into the crowded market. A look at the spec sheet shows that Asus has put together the ideal hardware. The ROG Phone 5 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888SoC and comes with up to 18GB of LPDDR5X RAM! So, is this the best gaming smartphone you can buy in India? We have the ROG Phone 5 out and here are our first impressions.
Phone models and prices
Asus has included three smartphones in the ROG 5 bundle: ROG Phone 5, ROG Phone 5 Pro and ROG Phone 5 Ultimate. The latter is stacked to the end and will be imported in limited quantities here in India. Asus has released two variants of the ROG Phone 5. The base version comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, while the top version comes with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The prices are Rs 49,999 and Rs 57,999 and they are available in glossy black or white.
The ROG Phone 5 Pro is only offered in a 16GB RAM and 512GB storage configuration at a price of Rs. 69,999 and is available in glossy ghost black. On the other hand, the ROG Phone 5 Ultimate has just arrived in Storm White matte finish with 18GB RAM and 512GB storage for Rs 79,999. Each of the variants has LPDDR5X memory and UFS 3.1 memory.
Attractive features and materials
The ROG Phone 5 is a large smartphone with a 6.78-inch screen with a 20.4:9 aspect ratio. This is a Samsung HDR 10+ guaranteed AMOLED panel with Full HD+ resolution. The refresh rate is 144 Hz, but of course it is set to 120 Hz. Asus specifies a peak brightness of 1200nits. The front is Corning Gorilla Glass Victus and the back is Gorilla Glass 3. The screen has thin bezels on the sides, but is slightly thicker on the top and bottom, where the stereo speakers are located. The top edge is also equipped with a 24-megapixel selfie camera and an LED indicator light.
When you pick up the phone, you will notice that it is very heavy (236 g). The housing is made of metal, but is adjustable so that it fits comfortably in your hand. The power and volume buttons are located on the right side of the bezel, towards the center, making them particularly easy to press. They are also the subject of much criticism. You also have ultrasonic AirTriggers on the right side (top if you’re holding the device horizontally) to play with. On the left half of the case, the ROG Phone 5 has a second USB Type-C port for charging and an exclusive port for accessories, including the Aeroactive Cooler 5. The left SIM plate has two holes for a nano-SIM card, but there is no room for a microSD card.
Drive axles
On the back of the ROG Phone 5 is a triple camera consisting of a 64-megapixel primary camera that uses pixel sampling to deliver 16-megapixel shots, a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with a 125-degree angle of view, and a 5-megapixel wide-angle camera. Each of them sits in a thin, oddly shaped camera module that wobbles a bit. The ROG Phone 5 features the Asus ROG logo on the back with customizable RGB lighting. At this point, the ROG Phone 5 Pro and ROG Phone 5 Ultimate have additional PMOLED screens that can display status information.
The Asus ROG Phone 5 is equipped with a 6000 mAh battery, consisting of two 3000 mAh cells that enable fast charging and protect the phone from overheating while charging. The two cells are located on the top and bottom of the smartphone, while the motherboard housing the SoC is in the middle. Another advantage of this layout is that the Aeroactive Cooler 5 accessory sits directly on top of the SoC when connected, allowing for efficient cooling. Asus claims the ROG Phone 5 is capable of 65W fast charging, but it only comes with a 30W charger. If you need a faster charger, you’ll need to buy a serviceable charger separately.
Snydragon 888 under the hood
The Asus ROG Phone 5 is the first smartphone powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC. The processor is clocked at 2.84 GHz and should be able to deliver amazing benchmark figures. Asus ships the ROG Phone 5 with Android 11 and the ROG UI. The user interface is impeccable and offers many customization options. The ROG Phone 5 had a security update for Android in January, which is really later. Some preinstalled applications on the phone, such as. B. Instagram and Facebook, have encountered it, but they can be deleted immediately, so it shouldn’t be a problem. No spam was noticed when using the ROG Phone 5.
Asus also sent me the Aeroactive 5 cooler, but it may also come with the ROG Phone 5 Pro and Ultimate models. Buyers of the ROG Phone 5 will have to purchase it separately. The aeroactive cooler 5 is clicked onto the phone and must be aligned with the pins on the left side. It is powered by the phone’s battery. Despite the fan, there are two activation buttons on the aero-active refrigerator 5, resulting in four deductions for this unit. The Asus ROG Phone 5 has arguably the best hardware available and cases that offer the best gaming experience.
